They did not?go at onee and she fired three shots into the crowd, but with- out hitting’any one. Last night the boys in the neighborhood went to finish the serenade, but were met as the men had been met before, and ordered off the premises. It is with a feeling of no little sorrow that I have severed my con- nection with St. Mark’s, Butler. I have been holding services there on alternate Sundays for over three years, and it is not easy to cut away from the friends and earnest. work- ers I have known there. It is the wish of the Bishop that Nevada and Butler should have more regular services than they have yet had, and under his advice I have taken charge of Nevada. Butler is blessed with a very churchly church building, though it is small, and its interior is very nicely furnished throughout. The one who takes charge there will find the lines falling to him in very pleasant places. He will give to Butler every Sunday in the month but one, and that will be devoted to Rich Hill, twelve miles away, on the “L. & 8.” division of the Missouri Pacific. Butler is the county seat of Bates county, and has 5,000 peo- ple. Rich Hill is a mining town, and has the same number. St. Mark’s has thirty-three members. Under such workers as Mr. and Mrs. Brugler, Miss Lu Lansdown and Miss Buck, the Sunday-school has made a splendid progress and now numbers sixty scholars. Throngh the kindness of Mr. J. K. Brugler a perfect little home of seven rooms on the lot adjoining the church is given to the use of the minister free of rent. I cannot speak of Butler without recording the constant kind- nesses of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Brug- ler, and never in my experience have I met such cheerful, tireless church workers. Through them there isa strong centre of Christian influence established in Butler. They have worked zealously for the church in its sunshine and its storm for eight- een years, and were it not for them the Episcopal church would scarce- ly be known in that fair town. W. B. High words followed when young McClain drew a revolver and shot Sample in the left breast, kill- ing him, and was about to fire again but was prevented by Sample’s wife. It is said that old man McClain told his son to do the shooting. The officers have arrested McClain, and he will have his trial to-morrow at Gilliam. Plow Work a Specialty.
