The object of the addition of the arsenic is which he says would no doubt have hurried him to the grave. Three skillful physicians treated his case, but gave him no relief. The holes in the collender vary from 1-50 to 1-360 of an inch, but the shot are of larger diameter than the holes. Owing to the fact that the period of dropping is not exactly uniform, from six to seven sizes are produced from the same sieve. The workmen who ladle the melted lead into the collen- der are required to exercise constant vigilance, for if the lead in the collen- der becomes chilled the holes are stopped up, and it is not an easy job to clean the vessel. After the shot have reached the bottom of the well they are lifted out and thrown upon a drying table. After being dried they are put intoa wire gauze cylinder, which revolves. As the shot are thrown into contact with each other as the cylinder revolves, whatever of roughness there may be upon them is worn off. The shot are then rolled down a series of inclined planes. There are open spaces between these planes. The perfectly round shot jump over these spaces, but the imper- fect ones, owing to deficient momen- tum, fall into the open spaces and are remelted. The shot are then placed in the separators and sorted out, accord- ing to size, by a complicated process. Shot making begins in July and ends in February. The greatest demand for these deadly little missiles is in August and September. The largest orders are received from the South, one dealer in Savannah often consum- ing one hundred and seventy tons of shot during a single season. This dealer not unfrequently orders forty tons atone time. The shot is mainly used by the planters in shooting rice birds which infest their fields in myriads and are shot to protect the crop. There are three shot-towers in New York City, two in Pittsburgh, one in Baltimore, one in West Virginia, one in New Orleans, two in Chicago, one in Omaha, two in St. Louis, one in Kansas City, and one in San Francisco. The oldest shot tower in the United States isin Philadelphia. The highest shot tower in the world is in Vallach, in the duchy of Carintha, Austria. . It is two hundred and forty-nine feet high.—N. F.
