Marmaduke, of Missouri, who was yesterday appointed super- intendent of the stamp vault of the t International Revenue Bureau, is the | youngest brother of the late Gov. | Marmaduke, and until a short time | ago was superintendent of the ser- i vice of the Pullman Palace Car Com- | pany in Florida. Three weeks ago | his appointment was decided upon i by the President, but at the last | moment it was discovered that poli- ' tical disabilities rendered him ineligi- i ble. He was a cadet at the United ij States Naval Academy at the open- ii ing of the war, and resigning, went He south and joined his fortunes with i the confederacy. His political dis- i ablilities so incurred had never been i removed. Senator Vest according- if ly introduced a bill removing them, He and it passed both houses and a it few days ago received the sig- i nature of the president. The ap- { pointment was accordingly made H yesterday, and Mr. Marmaduke will enter at once upon. the duties of a $2,000 position. Don’t Experiment. It has al- ready gone through the senate. Tn the last congress the senate also “passed it, but failed in the house for want of time to consider it. As it is to be reported in that body early enacted. The measure is not parti- san. It will give back to the states support of the government at the beginning of the war, and will can- cel the claims which the government holds against the seceded states 3 __ Which declined to pay the tax. If ! the bill passes, Missouri will get $751,127 from the national E Illinois will get $1,466,551, Iows $452,088 and Kansas $71,743. The whole amount paid to the govern- ment by the states by this tax was about $15,000,000. The return of this sum, therefore, will make a rea- sonably fair sized hole in the sur- plus.—Globe.
