The creditors | Z jare several tradesmen and retail | firms. Mrs. Hendricks is the woman | | whom Miss Mary A. Grown, of Mor- |ristown, loaned at various times j some $30,000 upon representations that she had a fortune of $500,000 locked up in the hands of an agent in New York. As the investigation of the transactions which she had with other confiding acquaintances progresses new victims develop, and it is stated that up to-night cred- itors whose claims aggregate over $100,000 have been located. The amounts which these people entrust- ed to the woman range from $5,000 to $36,000 and in each case the money was given willingly upon the representations that she had a large fortune which was for the time out of her reach. In one or two instanc- es she exhibited a paper which pur- ported to be and which she declared was a bond of the United States gov- ernment of the amount of $750,000 for the payment of the mythical leg- acy, and in this manner reassured her victims. Mrs. Hendricks has disappeared and her husband and son profess not to know her whereabouts. They also say they did not know she was engaged in such practices as are charged against her. Some of her victims still maintain confidence in her. FIGHTING FORTHE LAND. Three of a Family Killed and Two Officers Fatally Wounded. San Diego, Cal., Jan. 20.—A year ago Lewis Stone, a rancher in Moosa canyon, went east and during his ab- sense a family named Goen, consist- ing of a widow, two sons and a daughter, took possession of his ranch and cabin. On his return he instituted legal proceedings to eject the parties. Last Wednesday Sheriff Breidlove went to take proscession, when the whole Goen family faced the officers with revolvers. Breidlove took a revolver from Mrs. Goen, who was at the door, and she seized a gun and shot him in the face. In the melee which followed Citizen Reed was fatally wounded by Percy Goen and a married daughter of Mrs. Goen was accidentally shot in the neck by her brother and fell dead, while Percy Goen was shot through the head and arm fatally, and his sister and brother were dead when the officers retreated with their wounded. Mrs. Goen still holds the fort, de- claring she wili not leave the place alive. Those afflicted with dyspepsia should use Liquor Pepsin Compound and get relief. For sale by Walls & Holt. Wellsville, O., Jan. 20.—Samuel Irkit, an old man who lives with his son-in law, J. Brinker, on a farm near here, went to the barn about dark last evening to see that the stock was properly housed. Not returning Brinker became alarmed and instituted a search. Lying in a corner of the barnyard was the body of the old man, with the flesh torn from his face and body by hogs, which were still preying upon him. He was so badly mutilat- ed that recognition was impossible. It is supposed Irkit, who was very feeble, slipped and fell and being unable to rise, was torn to pieces by the savage animals. He was 80 years of age. ‘ Absolutely Pure. This powder never varies. A marvel ofparity, a! and wholsomeness.
