C., Jan. 16.—At the last session of congress when | the ways and means committee was maturing a tariff reduction bill px1- ties interested in the mining ad | manufacture of zinc were great.y agitated and delegations headed by | Mr. McClellan of Joplin, Mo., aid| Mr. Means of Illinois came to Wast.- ington to protest against the reduc- tion of duty on zinc ore, represented to be 1f cents per pound or $33.60 per ton. It was insisted that if the duty was lessened utter ruin would follow and the zinc industry be crushed out of existence. However, no tariff reductien was accomplished and a delegation of zinc men from southwestern Missouri recently put in an appearance before the waysand means committee and reiterated their statements made at the Forty-ninth congress. At this juncture Mr. Breckenridge of Kentucky, concluded to emulate the example of Benjaman Eranklin’s experiment as to the putting the fist in the bowl to see if the water would run over, and he asked to be furnish- ed with the tariff schedule of duty on zinc ore.
