The factsare as follows: There | are four prisoners confined in the upper cell ot the jail, and it has been the custom of the Sheriff take their breakfast up about seven e’ clock. During the night the. prisoners had filed the hinges off the door of _ the inside cage and were in readiness fo pounce upon the Sheriff. when__he | opened the door while he had his arms full of plates, and thus over- | power him and make their - escape. | By some chance the Sheriff went up | to see that everything was safe betore | carrying up their breakfast. As he opened the cell door two of the | prisoners, Reed and Phibps, who } were in for grand larceny, made @ rush for him.. So sudden and ,un- expected was the’ assault that the | to | Sheriff was taken completely dy nN surprise. He jumped back in the room and called out tor Reed was the foremost, to get back. Reed paused for an instant, fatal te. him, for it gave the. Sheriff time to draw. him, shot him through the. bewels, the ball emtering the rightside, above the hip bone, passing through and lodging just'tmder the skin® on the lett side. Reed turned back into the cell and began.to:cry out in mor- talagony. The Sheriff summoned assistance and laid him on the bed in the room in which the shooting was done, and Dr. Renick was promptly summoned, who, after an exami- | nation, pronounced the wound fatal. | Philips, the ‘‘pal’” of Reed, slunk back into the ceil and was so fright- ened that he begged the Sheriff not to shoot him, eyen after he was locked up. The other two prisoners |who were inthe cell at the time, Lamb and Hickman, made no at- tempt to escape. Our readers will remember that | Reed and Phillips are the parties ar- | rested by J. T- Gorrell, at Joplin, | for stealing two horses trom him. At the time of turning the prisoners over Mr. Gorrell warned the Sher- iff that Reed was 2 desperate char- acter and would take any chances to ‘escape. ‘The wounded man gives | his name as F. M.
