HE BISMARCK TRIBUNE. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1937 " | Additional Sports [German Engines Run Successfully on Dust Gophers Need No Special Priming For Wildcat Tilt Revenge for Last Year's Defeat, Big Ten Grid Title Enough Incentive Chicago, Nov. 11. — (#) — Football Coach Bernie Bierman is asking no help this week from Psychologist Ber- nie Bierman in the job of getting Min- nesota's Golden Gophers primed to let Northwestern have it Saturday. Bierman has been able to stick strictly to improving the blocking and tackling and the execution of plays— for the Gophers need no “keying up.” At least 12 of them have been waiting for Saturday ever since Oct. 31 last year when Northwestern wrecked a perfect season for Minnesota by blast ing out a 6 to 0 triumph. Another incentive is that a victory will mean one more step toward regaining the Big Ten championship, the next thing to the national title claim which Ne- braska ruined. The Gophers again drilled in secret Wednesday, while preparations were made to seat a. near capacity crowd of 62,900. Northwestern had good and bad news before its final long workout for the battle. Coach Lynn Waldorf learned that Mike Galvano, varsity guard who was injured last week, will not be able to play again Elbing, Germany. — () — Dust and powdered grasshoppers soon may serve the Fatherland as mo- tor fuel. German scientists and engi- neers wrestling with the problem of using dust, waste, residues and even ground insects in motors have received word that experi- ments of Dr. H. Wahl, of the Schichau shipyards, with dust combustion engines are nearing success, One of the main obstacles of dust as fuel—the heavy wear and tear on the motor by grinding ashes—has been successfully over- come, declares Dr. Wahl. He says the Shichau company has devel- open a metal alloy which is hard- er than any known steel and therefore suitable for a motor de- signed to run on dust. New Metal Effective Previous attempts with dust combustion motors failed, explains Dr. Wahl, because usually after 150 hours trial run the cylinders and pistons were worn to pleces by the grinding effects of the ex- tremely hard residue of burnt dust. The new metal alloy, however, withstands the hardest grinding, he says, citing that only 1/700 of ® millimeter was ground off the cylinder walls of a motor made of the new metal during a test run of 150 hours. Motor Small experiments are part of the nation’s four-year plan to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Dr. Wahl says his “dust eater” is not much bigger than an ordi- nary motorcycle engine, but de- clines to divulge further details, except to say that it runs on al- most every kind of properly pow- erized dust, such as that of brown coal, hard coal, saw dust, remnants of grain, beech nuts, copra, cocoa powder, rice, hay and even ground grasshoppers. fullback, would not be able to play | Dickinson Fire because of a knee injury suffered in the Indiana tussle last week. Indiana, eyeing a chance to land runner-up honors in the title race, hustled through a highly satisfactory drill, their last hard assignment be- fore meeting Iowa. Coach Ir] Tubbs devoted Iowa's practice to polishing up the forward pass offense and de- fense. Rehearse for War Elsewhere the show is on, but in England there’ is rehearsal for a drama of Mars they hope will never be produced. While fleets of bombers showered death on cities in China and Spain, these am- bulance brigadiers of Brighton carried a “victim” from a house during a mock air raid. FAMILY SICK Basil Ryan Admitted to Hospital Shortly After Marriage to Unwed Mother Hickory, N. C., Nov. 11—(#)—Basil A. (Pat) Ryan, son of a wealthy New York family, was reported in a seri- ous condition Thursday at a hospital to which he was admitted a few hours after his marriage to 21-year-old Martha Barkley. Meanwhile at Morganton, home’ of the bride, it was disclosed by Mrs. Nina Ross, Burke county sheriff, that a warrant had been issued three weeks ago charging an unemployed store clerk there with paternity of Miss Barkley's two-months’ old son. Ryan, 28-year-old “amateur” coach and sportsman, has been a patient ia the hospital since he was taken there Friday morning from a hotel where he and his bride were regis- tered. Hospital attendants said Ryan had been allowed no visitors, but that Mrs. Ryan, a pretty, sandy-haired blonde and former high school stu- dent leader, had called at the hospital several times. Mrs. Ross said the youth named in the Morganton warrant was Ned A. Parks. She said the warrant had been sworn by a member of the Barkley family. She added that Parks, 24-year-old former clerk, had not been found, Mrs. Ryan was reported to be at this year.
