ae Se Planets’ Meeting Thought Ill Omen Mars and Jupiter Will Draw Close Together Soon in Southwest Skies By J. HUGH PRUETT Astronomer, University of Oregon Mars, the fiery trouble-maker of the skies, has recently been charging madly eastward among the stars to- ward the placid old king of the go‘s. Supiter,-as if in alarm, has taken to flight but has proved himself no match for the fleet-footed war-god. One magazine has suggested that this action in the heavens presages terrestrial war. But, as reputable astronomers no longer believe in as- trology, it seems that any war thus foretold will be limited to the sky- lords themselves. ‘These two bright planets will ap- pear very close to each other in the southwestern evening sky on Oct. 28 and 29. They will actually be nearest —one and one-half degrees—during a the day between but will be invisible te us then. On these evenings they will ap- parently be so close that field-glasses will show both in the same circle of view. The contrast in color will be CLIP THIS IF YOU WANT STORIES CONTINUED How many readers of the Bis- marck Tribune are interested in astronomical stories? Watchers of the skies will be inter- ested in the rapid separation of ths planets during the week which fol- lows this close approach. Mars, rush- ing eastward among the stars, will seek other worlds to conquer. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1987 IMMUNIZATION CLINIC TO BE HELD HERE 6 DAYS IN NOVEMBER Will Inoculate Needy Children Against Diphtheria and Smallpox The immunization clinic for the protection of children against diph- theria and smallpox will be held in Bismarck at the World War Me- morial building from 9 a. m., to 1 p. m., next Monday, Tuesday and Wed- nesday and again Nov. 18, 19 and 20. The clinic is for those children) whose parents are on relief. It will also include border line cases. No, charges are made, since all expenses are paid by the state health depart- ment and the city of Bismarck. All parents whose children are not in- cluded in the above and who wish this protection are requested to consult their family physicians. The clinic is conducted under the auspices of the state and city health departments with the co-operation of the physicians of Bismarck. Prevented by Injections Dipththeria is prevented by the simple process of two injections of the protective material, which are given three weeks apart. Smallpox is prevented by a single vaccination. According to Dr. A. M. Fisher, health Officer, both of the injections may be given at one time, He advises parents that all children need these protections. Any child over six months of age may receive the treatment and should have it to ald in preventing an epidemic. The’ old age adage, “An ounce of preven- tion is worth a pound of cure,” holds true for these conditions. All these cases could have been prevented by vaccination. Vaccination should be repeated every five to seven years, since the protection may wear off in that time. Cites Dangers of Disease Every child has the right to diph- therla prevention treatment. No child need have the disease if his parents see to his protection against it. Not only is the disease serious, Dr. Fisher explains, but the damage it leaves be- hind in children who recover may handicap them for life. the last year 100 children died weekly in the United States and Canada from diphtheria.
