| SIDEGLANCES - - By George Clark “When you buy jokes from Mme you're not experiment- ing. Every one of them has gone over big on nearly every program on the air.” pono. AT THE Benchley Made First All-Talkie Film Short Robert Benchley, featured in the new Robert Montgomery-Rosalind Russell co-starring romance, “Live, Love and Learn,” coming Thursday to the Bismarck Theatre, holds the rec- ord of having made the first all-talk- ing short in the history of motion pic- tures, Adapted from the famed humorist's comic essay, “The Treasurer's Re- port,” the short was made in 1928, It ushered in the wave of all-talking shorts which today are a common- place part of every theatre program. Executives were dubious about mak- ing the “Treasurer's Report” short. Sound was a brand new invention. All- talking short subjects of any kind , seemed like a radical innovation in those days. \ “They told me later,” Benchley re- called, ‘that the all-talking short policy was decided on the basis of just that one picture. If I were you, though, I would think nothing of it. Such incidents are commonplace in the lives of us pioneers.” The inimitable Benchley adds hilar- fous interludes to the romantic story of “Live, Love and Learn” which tells of a Greenwich Village artist who is lifted from poverty to unexpected fame and whose success goes to his head. “Dark” Africa has giyen the world $5,000,000,000 worth of gold, and more than $1,000,000,000 in diamonds, —_————e aBavyd I9A09 ON saayaze nok usyM JOOP 3u7 48 pred AUC IL, nok 19H Zuypusyyy Tv 205 emo 2g} Go yuG V iLHSIN SHL S.LHSINOL ees SONVG TIVAINAVO NOILVYEATSD SALT SJCH-TH POUL AUVSUSAAINN repeds W [ebdeds HyesuoD spy suooyeg oIsn. ye WSUO, 97 anof Jo aw ayy MOVIES Candid Camera Fad THE BISMARCK TRIB WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1937 THE GUMPS—WHAT’S RUNT UP TO? IM STUDYING NURSING AT SCHOOL, A Rui Featured in Picture] MYRA NORTH, SPECIAL NURSE Not since the early days of the radio, when crystal-sets and batter- jes cluttered up every parlor and fans stayed awake far into the night get- ting “DX” signals, has there been a craze like the present one for the candid-camera. The thrill of snap- ping anyone from a senator to a chorus queen in an off-guard pose has reached such proportions that night clubs all over the country are offering prizes for the best picture turned in on one of their “candid- camera nights.” Quick to sense this new develop- ment in the public fancy, Twentieth Century-Fox is the first film studio to bring to the screen in an impor- tant picture a clever reflection of this newest of imagination-capturers. One sequence in the latest adventure of the famous Chinese sleuth, “Charlie Chan on Broadway,” open- ing Thursday at the Capitol theatre, shows « hilarious “minicam-fan” field-day, and the resulting candid shots provide important clues toward the solution of a mysterious double m a ‘The scene is the swanky Hottentot club on the Great White Way, and as the camera flashlights boom, sudden death strikes in the club. Chan in- vades New York's brightest spot to find the greatest adventure of his career, with second murder per- petrated right under his very eyes! Tt is at this point that the nega- tives of the candid-camera fans are confiscated by the Oriental detec- tive, and the developed prints provide several startling facts.
