But the lake lies in the center of m maze of givers, small lakes, heavy forests and rocky land without transportation by rail or road. How could and a mining settlement be set up quickly there? The airplane seemed the only an- swer. But could heavy mining ma- chinery, Diesel and steam plants, a 60-foot smokestack, and other cum- ae equipment be transported by ne’ THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE. Informed Italian sources said this is one of the points on which Premier Mussolini and German Foreign Minis- ter Baron Konstantin von Neurath The authoritative Italian writer, Virginio Gayda, in Giornale d'Italia, said Italy and Germany are ready to give their cooperation to the proposed international agreements on these three conditions: 1, That the agreements be consist- ent and not utopian. 2, That they be inspired by re- Spect for the interests of all nations and free from monopolistic tenden- cies, 3. That they do not pretend to in- terfere with the policy of economic self-sufficiency which external con- ditions have imposed on Italy and Germany. Equipment that could be wedged through the plane doors was so loaded. Larger machinery was brok- en down and carried piecemeal, to be reassembled at the lake. The smoke- stack, six feet in diameter, was car- Tied in sections. When it proved impossible to load cargo of awkard length and size, such @s canoes, rails, boats, and the like, they were strapped to the wings or lashed to the pontoons, Taking off with such loads was a ticklish job, ‘but the pilots never missed a single takeoff or landing. Six-sevenths of the air-borne freight of the British Empire is carried in Canada. Winged ‘Box Cars’ In the early days of Canadian air- | freight, room was made in the trans- port planes by removing the seats, and many a prospector flying to new “diggings” slept on the softest parts of piles of freight as the plane soared over the wilds of north Canada. . Ninety per cent of it is connected with the min- ing industry. And in all of the mil- lion and a quarter miles this aerial freight traffic was carried, not a single life was lost.
