16 RAILWAY MAGNATE THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE. FRIDAY, MAY 7, 1937 SAYS FIRM INTENDS | j 10 GUT UP EMPIRE Purchaser of Van Sweringen System Outlines Plans Before Senators Washington, May 7.—(#)—Frank F. Kolbe; New York broker and one- time economics professor, told a sen- ate committee Friday, that his firm intended to “give away” its newly ac- | quired control of the great Van Swer- | ingen rail empire. He invited legislation to give the interstate commerce commission power to regulate railroad holding ccempanies—of which the vast trans- portation empire is to a large extent composed—and told the senate railway investigating committee: “We have no intention of retaining voting control. We want to broaden the basis of control, and give much greater power to the other security holders. At an inquiry into acquisition of the $3,000,000,000 railroad network by Young, Kolbe & Company, he dis- closed that the firm is planning a complete remodeling of the system's intricate corporate setup, in coopera- tion with government agencies. Earlier Robert R. Young, New York broker who recently joined in buying control of the nation’s largest rail- ‘road system, asserted at a senate in- quiry that “subsidized traffic” on highways and waterways was respon- sible for much of the financial ill- being of railroads. He told the senate railroad investi- gating committee that “railways should be given a fair break against subsidized government waterways and trucks.” A few moments earlier Senator Wheeler charged that the common stock in Alleghany corporation, a ma- jor holding company in Young's rail- road empire, had “absolutely no asset value.” Young told the committee that the government should forbid the devices which permitted him and associates 1o gain control of the vast Van Swer- ingen holdings. “We intend to do away with about 4& or 80 per cent of the companies of that chart,” he said, pointing to a diagram of the 240 companies that compose the empire. A very large portion of the world Airplane Won't Wait Even for First Lady | Minneapolis, May 7.—(?)—America’s first lady learned early that even the \first lady’s breakfast can’t halt an airplane Friday schedule—not even for another swallow of coffee. So when an eastbond Northwest Airways plane zoomed off the munic- ipal flying field, Mrs. Roosevelt left behind on the lunch room counter a half cup of coffee and several pieces of marmalade toast. Mrs. Roosevelt was en route from Seattle to New York. Her plane paused in Minneapolis just long enough for a bite. But reporters and news photo- graphers took up so much of her the repast. Her trip west, Mrs. Roosevelt said, was purely a “family trip” to visit her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and output of Christmas cards is manu- factured in Germany.
