RIGHT NEW PLANES BRING FABRICATED ROR NW AIRLINES Faster, More Comfortable Ships "To Be Put in Operation This Summer Purchase of eight new, super-pow- ered transport planes. by the North- west Airlines, Inc., was announced Friday by Croil Hunter, vice president and general manager. _ Representing an expenditures of nearly $1,000,000, the fleet now is-un- der construction in Los Angeles, and Gelivery of the first liner in St. Paul is scheduled for early summer. The ultimate in aviation engineer- ing, combining new, tested principles of safety, comfort, speed and power, rts will be operated on all routes of the Northwest Airlines, said Mr, Hunter. Known as the Lockheed 8-14, the new craft are perceptibly larger than the Lockheed Electras now operated. “The liners under construction,” said Mr. Hunter, “will not accommo- date more passengers than those we ‘are now operating, but will provide gteater comfort. The S-1¢ will carry 10 passengers in addition to a crew of three—a chief pilot, co-pilot, and @ hostess. ; “Club comfort will be provided for passengers in the new liners,” he added. “The seats are of the lounge type and can be adjusted to any de- sired position.” Bix-footers will not have to duck on boarding the luxurious liners, for the big cabins provide extra head clearance and plenty of leg room, ‘The ships are equipped with galleys, from which hot meals will be serve + by hostesses. In addition, there will be room aboard the giant craft for @ ton of mail and express, and com- partments for the safe transportation Of perishable merchandise.
