(Associated Press ato) CRUM CHALLENGES LANGER'S ANSWER Attorney for Welford Says Law|: Applies to All Officers; Asks Early Trial Demurrer to the answer filed by Governor William Langer to the suit under brought by Former Governor Walter Welford was filed in district court heré Friday by C, Liebert Crum, Wel- ford’s attorney. In his answer Langer asserted that the corrupt practices act did not ap- ply to candidates for the office of governor nor govern such elections and is void insofar as the office of Bovernor is concerned because it at- tempts to increase the qualifications for the office as set forth in the con- stitution; and that the court is with- out jurisdiction, Crum said the law reads “any state officer” and apy to candidates for the governorship as well as to can- didates for other positions. His con- tention, he said, is that the statute is clear and that the court has both jurisdiction and the duty to try it. It has not been customary to file the papers in such actions with the clerk of courts, he said, but “since something of a point seems to have been made of my failure to do ao I have placed them on file.” Crum said he ts asking for an early trial of the matter.
