She was 91. The “grand old lady of the stage” died Wednesday in the Blue Ridge mountain home to which she retired @ decade ago. Born in London March 12, 1845, as Blanche Galton, Mrs. Wiffen was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Galton. Her mother was a teacher of singing and was assisting in the management ot Covent Garden when the daughter took part in a musical entertainment. Mrs. Wiffin then was 17 and made such an unsatisfactory impression upon her mother that the latter vowed “Blanche should never again set foot on a stage.” Sent to Paris to Study To help carry out that mandate, Mrs. Wiffen was sent to Paris to study music, but the drudgery of Practicing soon discouraged her and she returned to London. She pre- Vailed upon her mother to change her attitude toward the stage and at 20 made her formal debut, taking the Part of a fairy in a musical extrava- ganza at the Royalty Theatre. After that engagement she made a short tour with her aunt, Louisa Payne, of the famous Payne-Harrison company, and then in 1868 came to America with the Galton Opera com- pany. The others of the company were her husband, Thomas Wiffen, to whom she had been married a month before; her mother, her sister, and a baritone named Hart. From that time Mrs. Wiffen had remained in the American theatre. Mrs. Wiffen was the one active member of the American stage who could contrast from personal experi- ence the condition between the days of the kerosene footlights and the modern days of the brillant electrical Stage equipment. Speaking of the early days, she said New York had in- troduced the gas footlights many years while the “provinces” still clung to kerosene, and told how greatly re- lieved all the players were when gas finally took the place of the oil lights everywhere. Lights Intrigued Her “We never dreamed of electric foot- lights,” she said, “but even they seem puny compared to the present flood and border lights, And when I played in the movies—oh, yes, I played in the movies—I was simply floored by the intricacy of the lighting.” After coming to the United States, Mrs, Wiffen and her husband played together in a number of New York productions and followed the most rigid regulations to keep themselves in condition for the hard work of their profession. Instead of partak- ing of midnight suppers and entering into the night life of the city, they went directly home after the night performance. They maintained the same apartment in New York for 22 years, and after the death of hes hus- band Mrs. Wiffen purchased @ farm in Virginia, where she lived with her daughter when not ectively engaged on the stage. During the latter years of Mrs. Wiffen’s life her daughter was her constant companion and acted as her personnal attendant. MILO PERKINS PROMOTED Washington, Nov. 27.—(?)—Milo R.
