Chief James Small Mouth and James Kakenwash, Indians from the Turtle Mountain reservatton, were held on a charge of resisting an of- ficer following the affray on the Can- adian border 15 miles west of St. John. Forces of United States patrolmen and the Rolette county sheriff were sent to the border between Pembina and Bottineau in an attempt to seize Joseph Greatwalker, the third Indian. Cornell, stationed at St. John, said he ordered an automobile to halt near the boundary Thursday. The occu-} pants sped away and fired several shots, all of which struck the inspec- tor’s car. Two of the Indians were caught after a chase in the Turtle mountains. Greatwalker, who escaped, was iden- tified as owner of the fleeing auto- mobile through license plates. Cornell said he was on watch for a suspected smugglers’ car at the time of the in- cident. ‘We must awaken to the fact that the world is at the parting of the ways.—Secretary of State Cordell Hull. Among the first to cause complaints are the ants, although in general they are more annoying than de- | structive. The various species of ants invade houses and lawns as well as gardens. In small gardens it is seldom! jthan wrapping cardboard collars around the individual plants. This protects the plant against injury. Other measures include a light ap- plication of poison bran, quite simi- lar to that used for grasshoppers, over the infested area in the late evening. The yellow and black striped cucum- ber beetle, which has a special fond- ness for cucumbers, squash and other similar plants, has recently put in its appearance in gardens. Both the adults and the larvae are injurious. The larvae get in the roots and stems of plants. Dusting of infested plants with a mixture consisting of calclum arsenate, 1 part, and land plaster, 20 | parts, is the best control measure. | The little white butterflies that are the adults of the cabbage worms are already flying about in the gar- dusting plants with 1 part Paris ‘Green and 7 parts air slacked lime or flour, applying the mixture when Fleabeetles are liable to be found on potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, ruta- ; bagas, turnips, radishes and other | Vegetables almost as soon as the} plants come through the ground. } They damage the plants by eating | small holes in the leaves.
