In doing so, he| followed the example of his grand-j| father and great ,grandfather. When his great grandmother, Queen Victoria, ascended the throne, ' there were four principal royal resi- dences—Windsor castle in the town of Windsor, and St. James's palace, Buckingham palace and Kensington palace, all in London. Windsor was, of course, the oldest of these, parts of it dating back to the 13th century. Next in age is St. James's palace, built for Henry VIII in 1536, Even to this day the royal court is the Court of St. James's and ambassadors are accredited to this court. Kensington palace was bought from the Earl of Nottingham in 1689 by King William Third. Buckingham palace was built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 and purchased by King George Third in 1761. Ever since, it has been the main London residence of ‘royalty. After Queen Victoria’s marriage to the German Prince Albert, he con- ceived the idea of a real home far away from the crowds and the cities. So in 1848 they bought Balmoral castle in Scotland with 25,000 acres of ground around it, mainly given up to deer. Queen Victoria's son, later King Edward VII, while still Prince of Wales, wanted a home he could chased 2,500 acres in Norfolk county) and built Sandringham. It is situated in| Windsor Great Park, about 23 miles) from London; and so is easy of access by car from London. Edward VIII Modernized It i It was already crown property and| has a rather romantic history. It is probable that this is the first of many such retreats from the world. Aides Expected to Stay The accession of Edward the Eighth to the throne will be the cause of some changes in the household which helps serve the sovereign. But it is universally believed that three men, who have been with him for years, will simply transfer their activities | from Fort Belvedere, and from 8t.
