' THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1984 HOME TOWN FOLKS SEE DILLINGER AS MISUNDERSTOOD BOY many Sign Petition Asking Am- nesty for America’s No. 1 Desperado Chicago, April 20—()—John Dill- inger may be poison to society in gen- 7eral, but in his home town of Moores- ville, Ind., he's just ® modern Robin { Hood on a spree, Down in Mooresville John Roe was circulating a petition requesting Gov- LOCKS REPAIRED KEYS MADE Lawn Mowers and Garden Tools Sharpened and Recon- ditioned. Many of Dillinger’s home-town ac- Quaintances are reported to have signed the petition which alleges that America’s, public enemy No. 1 didn't get a square deal when he was con- victed and sentenced to prison back in 1924 for robbing a grocer. Dillinger is not the bold, bad des- perado he has been pictured, the am- nesty petition says. “He has never,” it says, “manifested & vicious, revengeful or a-bloodthirsty disposition,” and adds that the plan to quit bothering him would not only Prevent bloodshed in his capture, but would give the state of Indiana some- thing to be proud of by the “gener- ous helping hand she had extended to her prodigal son.” Father Is Elated -Old John Dillinger, Sr., father of the “here today and gone tomorrow” fugitive. was little short of elated when he heard that the home town folks were sticking by his erring son. His idea about it is that John would make @ good policeman if he sur- renders and is permitted to re-join society. All the talk about making life eas- ler for Dillinger came to the fore Thursday about the time that it was reported a limping bandit, believed to have been Dillinger, with the assist- ance of three helpers, raided the Pana, ! Tl, witness said he thought the leader was Dillinger, but bank employes fail- ed to identify him through pictures, so an intensive hunt was begun for Roy Gann, of Pana, on suspicion that it was he and not the ubiquitous John who led the raid. Still more interesting was the fact that the freedom-for-Dillinger move- ment came to light just at the time the Indiana authorities were more or less agitated to learn that Dillinger had dropped in on the folks back home at their farm near Mooresville last April 7 and 8. . MCKENNEY not| (Secretary, American Bridge League) The earliest, and perhaps the most interesting of the Sims theories first ‘Socurday introduced to contract by that great card player, P, Hal Sims, and gen- erally used by tournament players throughout the country today, was his no trump theory. We all realize that, to make game at no trump, you must have a suit | that will establish in one round and | protection against a long suit of your | opponents. Therefore, until the holes are blocked, it is not wise to bid one no trump originally unless you hold an exceptionally powerful hand. I want to get you straight on this particular point—when your partner opens with one no trump, any re- sponse that you make is forcing. If you hold an exceptionally weak suit, ‘take out with two of that sult as North does today. Of course, that two diamond re- sponse may be weakness or semi- strength, but, remember, it is forcing to your partner. Now if South were to respond with 2 two no trump, North bids three dia- a . Even though you do establish the diamonds, you will not be able to get into my hand.” Today’s Contract Problem North is declarer at three no trump. East opens the queen of diamonds. How should North plan to play the hand? Here ts a tip-of— when the queen of clubs, is finessed, the ten drops from the East hand. Solution in next issue. 20 Over North's bid of two diamonds, East steps in with two spades. Nat- urally South—not being vulnerable— knows that if his partner’s bid of two diamonds was not based on weak- ness, they will gain more by setting the opponents than they could by making game themselves. Therefore, he doubles two spades. North, of course, must not leave the double in, but should bid three dia- monds, just as though the bidding had gone one no trump, two dia- monds, two no trump by South, three diamonds by North, His bid of three diamonds says, “Partner, my diamond take-out was based on weakness.” Many players with South's hold- ing might now make the mistake of trying for a game at no trump, or bidding hearts. But your partner has definitely told you that his hand ts JAMESTOWN MAN T0 HEAD STATE 8. A.R. FOR CURRENT YEAR Dr. J. D. Carr Succeeds M. L. McBride as Head of Pa- triotic Society Jamestown, N.
