HLLNGEFS DOUBLE NABBED IN ST. PAUL Man Who Looks Like Noted Desperado Questioned About Bank Robberies Minneapolis, March 23.—(4)—Sus- pected in connection with at least three recent midwestern bank robber- ies, Frank Dennis Carpenter of St. Paul, known to police as “Dillinger's Double,” was held in the city jail here Friday for out-of-town officials. He was captured by local detectives in a Minneapolis apartment Thurs- day without a fight. In the rooms were found a pistol and a quantity of fine wire like that often used for ty- ing bank robbery victims. Carpenter said he is a “sick man,” and if he is held long he will have to be “taken out on a stretcher.” He re- fused to make any other statement. Mason City, Ia., detectives were ex- pected here Friday to question the man in connection with a $52,000 bank robbery in that city March 13. A pic- ture of Carpenter was said by a vic- tim of the raid to resemble one of the machine gun bandits. Sioux Falls, S. D., authorities may examine him because victims of a cent bank holdup there noted a re- semblance in one of the robbers to John Dillinger, notorious jail breaker. Officials of a Byron, Minn., bank, robbed recently, indicated they would expect to join Olmsted county offi- cers in questioning Carpenter, and Melvin Passolt, chief of the state bu- reau of criminal apprehension in Minnesota, was asked to attend the police lineup Friday morning. . “tia aie | Weather Report e FORECAST For Bismarck and vicinity: Gen- erally fair tonight and Saturday; colder tonight. McKENNEY (Secretary, American Bridge League) The greatest in con- tract bridge is to hold a big hand and then get into the wrong spot. I much rather would have by partner fail to bid for a slam on a board than take a gamble on a grand slam when we have a sure small slam. At least we could get a plus score, if we made game, but if he bids for the grand slam and it cannot be made, we receive a minus score, and while it may be a minus score of only 50 or 100 points, it really is @ terrific loss. The Bidding The three bid eliminates a lot of guesswork on big hands, especially since the king-showing has been in- corporated, as well as ace showing. ‘When your partner makes an original three bid, he states that that is the only suit at which he is interested in playing the contract. He asks you to show the ace of trump, if you hold it—otherwise your highest ranking ace, and, without an ace, to bid three | m no trump. If the original bidder bids a second suit, he is asking for the king of that suit, and you respond by bidding that suit, if you hold the king. Not hold- ing the king, you should go back to 6, 1934, The Board of County Commission- ers convened at 10 o'clock a. m. roll call Commissioners ‘Swanson, Tiedman, Will, Fricke and Soder were present. If you were not ‘vulnerable and held the East hand, and North opened with one no*trump, what would you do? Remember, North is vulnerable. Solution in next issue. the bidder's original suit. A good example of king-showing is given in today’s hand. Of course, South is not interested in any aces, since he holds them all. But he would like to know the loca- tion of two kings. So he makes an original three bid, knowing that the only answer his partner can make is three no trump. South now is interested in the king He first asks for the lowest king by bidding four clubs. If North did not hold the king of clubs, he simply would bid four hearts could bid four diamonds. In this case he held the king of clubs, so his response was five clubs. South knew that he could make six, so he bid five diamonds, to see partner held the king of diamonds. If North had not held the king of diamonds, he simply would bid five hearts, and South could bid six no ee the king of dia- with six diamonds oath the declarer now has every losing card located, assuming, of course, that the heart suit will break.
