Russian Capital Is Reproduced in Film Technicians who worked on the screen production of “Rasputin and the Empress,” now showing at the Paramount Theater, following its sen- sational showing in New York and the principal cities of the country, were faced with the problem of re- producing scores of buildings from! pre-war Moscow as well as the hun- dred and one details having to do with court coronation, state reception and the private life of Russia's regal family. Fist Appearance Together John, Ethel and Lionel Barrymore all appear in this screen production, joined together for the first time in their respective stage and screen ca- reers. Miss Barrymore's characteriza- tion of the Czarina also stands as her debut in dialogue pictures, her only! other cinema work having been in the era of silent films. John Barrymore has the role of Prince Chegodieff, who tries in vain to prevent the downfall of the Russian aristocracy, while Lionel is to be seen as Rasputin, more generally known as the Mad Monk, or “Holy Devil”. The character of Rasputin has been * discussed by so many fiction and non-| fiction writers since the mysterious monk's death in 1916, that the chief historical facts are well known. Born in Siberia in 1870, Rasputin was in- troduced. into society circles in St. Petersburg and as a result of his magnetic personality and alleged mys- tic powers, he became intimate with the Emperor Nicholas and exercised in the state decisions of the Czar and Czarina. Rasputin, according to all hhis biographers, led a life of dissipa- tion and intrigue. In 1914 he was stabbed by a woman friend of a girl whom he had betrayed. He had the services of the czar’s physician, and recovered, only to meet a violent Geath two years later.
