SEEKS LEGAL BAN ONUSE ORDOGSI ~HRDIGAL HOO ‘Anti-Vivisectionist Leader Lec- tures Senate Committee on Cruelty of Practi¢e : Abolition of experiments on dogs would not work a hardship on medi- Jong and careful observation both here and abroad had convinced him that the dog was not an accurate criterion for man in any sort of an experiment and that conclusions reached from experiments 6n ‘dogs often led the experimenter astray. Tortured Withoat Profit “The ground for dog exemption,” Di. Held said, “is vivisection, immeasurably beyond any other pur- suit, involves the infliction of torture to little or no purpose. “Entirely aside’ from this, we have the human element to consider. The bee instinct, present in all but cal colleges or the medical profession, | by Dr. William Held, Chicago physician and surgeon, told the senate state affairs committee today. ..Dr. Held appeared in support of a Bill sponsored by the North Dakota anti-vivisection society to exempt the dog from vivisection. He is a con- ting endocrinologist to the medi- profession, president of the facul- ty and diagnostician of the Chicago college of endocrinology, a former lecturer and clinician on epilepsy at the Illinois post graduate medical school, and a lecturer.on physiology at John Marshall law school. Senator Dell Patterson of Renville county, author of the bill, filed with the committee a petition of several hundred signatures of persons who urged favorable action on the bill. ‘The committee deferred action on the measure after hearing Dr. Held. Dr. Held told the committee: that laboratories and medical “By reason of its availability, do- cility and intelligence, the-dog pays a greater toll to this cruelty than any other animal He has no particular commercial value, the pig, which more nearly approximates the human body, can be sold for food. ‘This commercial factor explains why the dog is used, even though he is not as suitable as other animals, Says Law Should Interfere “There can be no doubt that in vivi- section of dogs there exists a case of cruelty to animals far transcending its refinement and in its horror tnything that has been known in the history of nations. The law should interfere.” Clarence E. Richard, managing di- rector of the National Anti-viyisec- tion society, Chicago, was another witness before the committee. Mi Richard produced documentary evi Cence front various medica! journals to support his claims that cruelty is | the common lot of the laboratory dog. | He characterized claims of oppon- jents of the bill that no cruelty ex- 1st as “deliberate cvasions in an at- | empt ‘to prevent the general putlic trom learning the truth about what goes on In the laboratories.” WAITRESS ROUTS BANDITS Feb. aitress, balked | | Hampton, Mini Miss Florence.
