THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1930 YBGGS TAKE HUGE TOLL FROM BANKS, SPEAKER DECLARES Tells Northwest Group Crime Costs Institutions $12,- 000,000 Yearly Minneapolis, Nov. 7.—(#)—The toll paid by banks of the United States to holdup men, yeggs, forgers and other thieves has exceeding $12,000,000 a year for the past five years and, mounting steadily, constitutes one of the great menaces to present day civilization, James E. Baum of New York, deputy manager of the Amer- ican Bankers association and head of its protective department, said today. “Bank robbery in its various forms is only one item in today’s vast pro- ff \\Bram of crime,” said Mr. Baum. \} “Crime is strongly entrenched, not alone in politics but also as one of \the major elements that raise the cost of legitimate business—and the cost of living. We must look upon the underworld as “another world whose population has more than trebled in the last decade.” The tri-state conference on bank management, on whose program Mr.’ Baum is one of the chief speakers, opened today with nearly 1,000 bank Cfficials of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota in attendance. The conference, sponsored by the Bankers’ association of three states, is an annual event. Their presidents, C. B. Brombach of Minneapolis, J. E. Davis of Bismarck, and A. B. Cahalan \of Miller, 8. D., were official hosts. Speakers on thé morning program included William C. Rempfer, Parks- ton, 8. D.; J. A. Danforth, Yankton, S. D.; H. A. Merrifeld, Hankinson, N. D.; M. I. Orms, Sioux Falls, 8. D.; H. H. Martin, Crosby, N. D., and W. P. Joens, Mobridge, S. D. The afternoon program included a talk by James 8. Milloy, secretary, Greater North Dakota association, Fargo; and W. Y.
