RITA. ¢——____—_______-—_- | At the Movies >—<—__—_——_* ELTINGE THEATRE Lon Chaney has played many roles, sinister, mysterious and other- wise, but for the first time in his life he is now playing a policman. The great character star is cast as lainclothesman on the New York lice force in his latest picture. “While the City Sleeps,” coming tc the Eltinge for Friday and Saturday. It is a vivid story of the “inside” of the New York police force, in which Chaney plays a detective who takes a fatherly interest in a young pe whose “boy friend” is associat- ieee a dangerous band of crooks. j hese gangsters lead the boy into a loft robbery, but the detective, watching over him, saves him at the last minute and reforms him, so that the girl will have her lover. Which is a sacrifice on his part as he, too, | deeply loves the girl. Dramatic pursuit of crooks, a sen- sational battle of police and gang- sters with machine guns, a running battle on the roof of the city and the operation of the “shadow box” of the New York police are among the most dramatic highlights of the absorbing and powerful story.
