"PAGE SIX. CITY NEEDS NO . _ LAWS OR RULES Island Inhabited by Sir Walter) Raleigh’s Men Home of 1,200 Persons Harker's Island, N. C., Oct. 25.— (®)—This little island community, said by some to be the first place inhabited by a group of English set- tlers sent over by Sir Walter Ral- eigh, offers an interesting study in government and sociology. Without local laws or govern- ment, whithovt officers and without resident physicians, the 1,200 in- habitants of the 5,000 acre com- munity live happily, peacefully and they have good health, Lying in Core Sound; off the Car- olina coast, the island is connected by passenger and mail boats with Beaufort, N. C. All of the island’s residents except one, a negro serv-| ant, are white. ite While there are two moving pic-| ture shows, the pleasures of the island folk are simple. They get | most joy out of music. A few) ianos, organs and phonographs ave been imported, but “home- made music” from dishpans, mtouth- organs, paper -covered combs, vio- lins and accordions generally is preferred. Whales which occasionally ap- pear off the coast offer sport to the population, most of which is engaged in fishing. Everybody joins in the fight, and everybody shares in the profits when the whale is captured. j The shore front is covered with tacks to dry fish nets, and on the southern shore side are the homes. In the sound, small boats lie at anchor. It is a quiet, restful place. The interior is a haven of beauty. There are jungles of yapon trees, bedecked with myriads of scarlet berries. Pine trees and wild flow- ers grow luxuriously. Winding by- ways, where feet of the fishermen have trod for years, wander through the woods. High School Youths Jailed. After Riot Before Grid Contest) Sebring, Ohio, Oct. 25.—(P)—Six |} ‘Alliance high school youths were in| jail here today as the outcome of a pitched battle with vegetables for ammunition between supporters of the football teams of the Alliance and Sebring high schools last night. Alliance and Sebring were sched- uled for a gridiron clash today, and last night between 50 and 75 Alli- ance rooters came here and started to tear down the purple and gold emblems of the Sebring team which hung from flag posts about the town. A general free-for-all, with cab- bages and tomatoes followed. Po- lice managed to disperse the crowd with, the exception of six Alliance boys, who turned their attention to a patrolman. He exhibited a black- cned eye today. The officer with the help of bystander finally herded them into jail. Wrecked Ship’s Crew Is All Accounted for Montreal, Oct. 25—(P)—A tele- gram received today by Furness Withy and Company, Ltd., said that all of the crew of the steamer Cairn- torr, ashore near Cape Whittle in ADVERTISEMENT Relief from Curse of Constipation A Battle Creek physician says, “Constipation is responsible for more misery than any other cause.” But immediate relief has been found. WILKINS BOUND FOR POLE BASE Exploration by Means of Submarine Montevideo, Uruguay, Oct, 25.— (AP)—Sir George Hubert Wilkins today was sailing south on the Whaler Hektoria for a new conquest of polar regions by airplane. The Australian airman and explorer, who last summer startled the world by flying across North Polar regions from Alaska to Spitzbergen, was headed for Deception Island. There he will establish @ base for explora- tion by air of large spaces of the antarctic. While these present plans were uppermost in his mind he had under consideration the feasability of fu- ture exploration in the region by submarine. He thought that trips under icefields and icebergs would not necessarily be dangerous and pointed out that during the world war submarines were frequ@tly navigated under ice in Scandinavian and Finnish waters, Such undersea exploration would not be undertaken for two-years, he said, when he hoped the Brit gov-| ernment wculd come to his aid. He| expected to return from the present expedition in March and then during | the following season return to es- | tablish weather stations in South Polar regions. Smith, on the other hand, has showed his intention at various times and in various ways to do everything that will help the North- west farmer cut of his difficulties and give him a chance to make the cost of production and a fair profit. “At present, if the farm equaliza- tion bills that have been pro) were passed, the farmers of North THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1928 Legion Auxiliary Plans] Pence, Minot, Mra.
