COOLIDGE TO DIME NOVEL COUNTRY. GHOSTS OF GUNMEN, PROSPECTORS AND INDIANS STALK VACATION LAND | Deadwood, Near Summer ~ Home Site in South Dakota, Is Famous Because of Deadwood Dick, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Other Characters (BY PETFR EDSON) Rapid City, S. D., June 10—(NEA) <If Calvin Vooliage comes pack 110.4 his yacation this summer: wearing a Shepallon hat, chaps, and a trusty Ix-shooter, there'll be a reason: he ig going to spend his vacation in the heart of the country made famous by the infamous yellow-backed dime novel. In the Black Hills canyons to.the north and south and west of the sum- mer White House near Rapid City, are the ghosts of more two-gun men than Bill Hart and Tom Mix together ever impersonated in the movies. Twice a month, Deadwood Dick, with his one eye and his sawed off shot gun loaded with buckshot, and two peati-handled six-shooters at his belt, used to ride through this coun- try sitting on a Wells Fargo le filled with $500,000 in gold, shooting a way. clear to Omaha and furnish- imspiration for the Beadle Dime Library. Calamity Jane In White Rock cemetery, north of Deadwood, they -used to bury a man every morning before breakfast. Here now ‘repose the bones of im- mortal “Wild ait” Hickok, who had forty agtches on his gun, and Calam- ity Jane, who threw away her wom- en's clothes, dressed as a man, was a mule skinner for Coolidge, the Indian fighter, and the toughest, hard swear- ing, hard. riding, hard. drinking wo- man who ever graduated from the school of experience. She was a Mi souri preacher's daughter and she got her name from the calamity as brought on all who got in the range of her gun. She was most handy with a sit-shooter. Single- handed, ie captured = McCall, Hickock’s layer, with a butcher's cleaver, Belle Fourche, just a few smiles further north, is still the scene ‘of one of Fagin best rodeos and round- ups. im, Only. a ee more than’50 years ago all this couniey was a howling Florence Borner) Watch pol, ha while in the in the street? to greet, * Do wea eeethes on the walk latch =e your ace sia» male ina cart. travel far, 4 a » furious, rate, fate, TO MERRL ale mureneny EXEQSTIVE ' OFFICES SUMMER RESORT, wilderness. Then one of Custer’s scouts discovered gold a few miles south of where Coolidge will hang his hat this summer, and the place became a howling wilderness of sin. It was a country so bad that there is a-monument erected in the town of Custer to Mrs. Anna D. Tallent, the first white woman who dared set foot in the region. Monument to Teddy There are two other famous monu- ments in the hills. One, outside the town of Deadwood, is erected to Theodore Roosevelt. In his hunting days Teddy roamed these hills and liked ‘em. The other monument is erected. to the first sky pilot in Deadwood, Preacher Smith,.who marched right into “Nutshell Bill's” saloon, made | them clear away the bottles from the bar and abandon the faro and poker tables while he conducted divine serv- ices and passed the hat for a cel- lection of gold dust and nuggets.! One day Preacher Smith went to! Crook City to reform that place, and the Sioux Indians caught him and scalped him. Even Calamity Jane Not far away, from Rapi y is the city of eh ite which has been worked for more than 50 ana | and produces about $8,000,000 worth of gold a year—one-seventh of ithe! whole world’s production. Famous ‘Beauty Spot There ate 1800 square miles of| United States forest reserve to the | west of the summer White House, land thousands ‘of square miles more jtoo, all covered with the dark pines | jwhich give the Black Hills their name. The hills themselyes cover an! area 60 je and over a hun-| dred mites long. | Harney peak, 7200 fect high, is the highest mountaih east of ‘the Rockies. By some freak of nature these hills were pushed up out of a level plain. | North, cast and west stretch vast expanses of the prairie And as if the country were. not! wild enough in its history and per onal narrative to suit even a pre dent’s fancy, 40° miles to the east of Rapid City are the famous bad lands | of South Dakota, Here, ages and { cons before the days of Wild Bill, | Calamity Jane and Custer, roa the saber-toothed tiger, the dino and the three-toed horse. ‘ still dig the fossils old rock and ship the bones to museums. All this but 30 hours by train from | Chicago, Tame Enough Now Of course the country is n jwild now. Four railroads lead into Rapid City. Two of them end in Deadwood, as though this pot of gold were the rainbow's end. There ure broad, beautiful highways through the hills, well marked, leading to Denver, Omaha, Minneapolis, Chey- enna, or where you will. At Deadwood last year they had & season of opera, guaranteed by the Vdlunteer Fire department. Gutzon Borglum is thinking of carving stat- ues of George Washington and Lin- coln on some of the more prominent dornicks. Chambers of commerce and all the other latest nifties of civi ization are found in every city. All of the bold, bad) men been chased out of the hills. sheriff's force in Rapid City says there are a few moonshiners left, !but whenever they are caught they ure fined $29.75 and set to work cutting the grass on the courthouse , lawn, at all have | The Napoleon House, in New Orleans, to which friends of the famous een- eral planned to take him after effect- ing his rescue from St. Helena, is offered for sale.
