FINANCIAL REVIEW ~(#)—The first New York, Jan. 8. week of the new year on the York stock exchange failed to develop a definite trend in stock prices al- though bond quotations advanced to the highest general level in 15 years. Money rates softened, bringing call funds to the lowest levels since last October. Irregularity in the stock market was attributed to a variety of causes. The turn of the year naturally brought a large volume of selling by traders who wished to take profits but did not care to include their gains in their 1926 income statements. Of- ferings generally were well absorb- No. | ed. Two more dividend disappoints served to chill the enthusiasm of speculators who had expected the re- cent stock dividend on U. S. The-announcement of several price cuts marred the bullish demonstra- tions inthe motors, which usually precede the opening of the New York automobile show. Steel shares inclin- ed to hzaviness when the weekly trade reviews reported no upturn in the pre-holiday rate of operations, but strengthened later on unofficial re- ports that mills of the U. 8. Shares of companies operating in Mexico were liquidated rather freely | weak; receipts: fo New | 2: were again slightly reduced to8 the week, prices at the close were ‘firm on account of the scarcity of choice offerings. Demand for the *tést grades was good with the ordinary tun rather slow. Corn finished the week at about unchenged prices although this grain, like wheat, showed a relapse the tore- part of the week. Oats showed little change, holding steady throughout. Rye tur firmer with wheat and showed some independent strength on acevunt of good export sales. « Flax had a sinking spell early in the week along with other grains. However, at the lower levels both crusher and speculative buying turn- ed good and prices quickly reacted.
