The week of November 14t which has been designated by t commission as “Safety Week” pro1 ises to be generally observed by the} citizens of North Dakota: The nev papers of the .state and many ¢! bodies have begun a campaign along the lines suggested by the commission. | from this campaign. hag been engaged by the commission for the purposes of staging a demon- Stration. Many interesting exhibits are being prepared for this display. A study of the varying speeds automobiles and trains is very inter-| esting. A train moving from 35 to a) miles an hour will ordinarily come to} 2 stop in about 1,200 feet; au stomobiles| running at the same speed can be} stopped in about 30 feet. Trains often | es weigh as much as 3,000 tons while an| autombile rarely weighs more than! two tons. It can be readily seen that; the greater weight once under way is much harder to stop. A train run- ning 60 miles an hour when a fuil quarter of a mile away would be on the crossing in just 15 seconds, and no person in an automobile can cor rectly judge the train speed. Un- doubtedly grade crossing accidents present one of the most difficult prob- lems of today. Almost every newspa- per one picks up contains an account of a crossing accident. Statistics show that about 1,800 persons are killed on grade crossings each year and twice that many are seriously in- jured, about 75 fer cent of whom are! the occupants of automobtfles. Seven- teen times as many persons were Kill- ed on crossings as there were pas- sengersckilled on all railways The commission earnestly solicits the co-operation ‘of every individual and organization in this campaign ot education to reduce the number of! crossing accidents, TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY FOR RENT—5 rooms and bath, mod- ern house, corner 13th St. and Ave. B; immediate possession.
