Nestos, at his home in Minot, issued the following statement /Menoken : this afternoon: “Now that the returns definitely establish a victory for the Inde- pendent forces and program, it is ‘my desire as the candidate of the Independents for the governor- ship wf North Dakota to exprsss my appreciation for the confi- dence reposed in me by the men and women who by their votes have elected me governor of the state and to assure them that, in the administration of the office, it shall be my constant aim and effort to redeem the pledges of the platform and the promises made during the campaign. I realize keenly the magnitude of the problems and difficulties ¢on- fronting the new administration and that the loyal unselfish and intelligent cooperation of the citizenship of the commonwealth will be required in order to insure a satisfactory solution .of these problems. ' “In the administration of the governors office and in the man- agement of the public business I shall have no enemies to punish and no scores to settle and it is my purpose tio be the governor of all the people and to make evi- dent by my administrative acts, that in the management of the educational, charitable and penal institutions of our stato in the building and operation. of the mill and’ elevator at Grand Forks, in the establishment of a system of rural credits, in the liquidation of The Bank of North Dakota and in the examination and supervision cf banks of the state, whether closed or open, that the state is entering upon a period of ’ con- struction and. cooperative _ effort in rehabilitating the business of the state, and that in this process every legitimate calling whether in town or country will have .a chance to prosper. and the ave- nues of opportunity be kept open for all our people as far as it is possible for an administration to promote and realize such an ideal. ‘By following such a course and by securing for the management of the states business the most cap- able INorth, Dakotans that can be had for the meager salaries offer- ed and by insisting upon honesty, efficiency, economy and publicity in the conduct of the public busi- =/neas, the expenditure of the public ocpiids and the keeping of the pub- lic records, I am sure‘that North ‘Dakota will once more secure the confidence of the people of other states and that as @ result there- of the credit of our ‘state will be speedily re-estaablished.’ HUNT ALLEGED — - SLAYERINS.D. About 450 on Full Returns spate ssiaha, FRAZIER GAINS IN CITY League Vote Shows Increase and Independent Vote a Big Slump in Bismarck Burleigh county wil! give Governor Frazier a majority of between 450! and 500, it appeared today with 44! out of 58 precincts reported. With 44 out of 59 precincts reported Frazier had 2567 votes to 2760 for Nestos. Most ofthe remaining pre- cincts are strongly league, With 50 out of 58 precinct the vote stood Frazier 2891; Nestos 2604.; The missing precincts last year gave Frazier 150 majority. i The heaviest losses sustained in the! Burleigh and Morton counties, in the early returns, with some other coun- tles in this section of the state also showing a loss for Nestos over the O'Connor vote. This was the report from Emmons and McIntosh. There were not many changes in the rural precincts in Burleigh coun- ty. In the town of McKenzie the In- dependent vote made a strong gain. several rural precincts Frazier made a gain, The vote appeared to be fully as| Irge in the rural precincts on the in-} itiated laws and other candidates as latively the same throughout. MANY CITY ve STAY AT Many Bismarck voters did not go to. the polls yesterday. This is shown by the fact that the total vote cast in the ‘city on the gubernatorial candidates was 2,831 in .the recall electioh compared to 3,249 cast in the) general election a year ago. The majority of R. A. Nestos in the; city, a total of 685°on completé un-; official returns was 652 votes less than the majority of O'Connor. over TS RECOVERING Suffers From Effects of Over- dose of Morphine New York, Oct. 29—Evelyn Nesbit was reported today almost wholly re- covered from the effects of an over- dose of morphine swallowed yester- ‘day when a city marshal began to {move her furniture from her room and apartment in West 52nd St. The former. wife of Harry K. Thaw, who later married, and was divorced from a dancer, became hysterical when her efforts to obtain funds to pay her overdue rent failed and swallowed 1 gram of drugs. She call- ed down to the marshal informing him of what she had done and collapsed. The marshal’s summoning a physician is said to have saved her life. PARIS POLICE ARREST ONE IN | HERRICK CASE Paris, Oct. 28.—The police investi- gating the attempt against Ambassa- dor Herrick have arrested a chemist Raymond Robins, finding grenades in his home. These are said to be iden- tical with the one received throug the mail at the American embassy ad- dressed to the athbassador. Robbins denies all knowledge of the Herrick affair. Leeds, S. With the comparison of the, vote of last year and the esti- mated vote out in the rural precints yet not heard from, there seemed a remote chance, Nonpartisans maintained, that Governor Frazier could overcome the great lead of Mr. Nestos, which the Independents declare elect him beyond a doubt. With the election of the Independent candidate for Gover- inor, the voters of the state also would prt into office Sveinbjorn \Johnson for Attorney-General and Joseph A. Kitchen for Com- missioner of Agriculture and Labor, and adopt the complete Independent program of laws, with the possible exception of the ‘election laws, as the vote throughout was about the same. i The Valley Vote . The vote which went heavily for Nestos in the cities and in the Red River valley began to recede this afternoon rapidly as the |strong Nonpartisan precincts of the western part of the state rolled in. There were so many instances of a gain for Nestos over |the O’Connor vote in the rural precincts that it appeared that the majority of Mr. Nestos could not be wiped out. With Independent headquarters in Fargo preparing a cele- bration, Mr. Nestos issuing a statement and Independents of Dick- inson wiring President Hardipg for permission “for the readmis- sion of North Dakota into the United States” the league head- quarters refused to concede victory, and declared they would wait . until the rural vote was in. _ _ Where Tide Turned Governor Frazier did not care to express a statement this ene and appeared te be, betes digging into a mass of cor- jYespondence that accumulated during. th i int hi own iat im the election: Ce ee " co _, The facts which accounted for Mr. Nestos’ lead where the bi: gain in the,rural vote in the Red River country, the pial the league vote in the north and northwestern parts of the state and overturns in some other rural precincts. | The hotbeds of Nonpartisanism turned in Majorities about as usual, according to reports, although there were instances where townships turned completely over.
