PAGE SIX CROPS HAVE A TRYING WEEK, BAYS REPORT Review of Condition of Crops in} the Northwest is Given The weekly crop report of the Van: Dusen, Harrington Company, of Min-! neapolis, says: The grain crops of the northwest have been subjected to very tryi conditions the past week. Tempera- tures have been extremely high and usually accompanied by hot winds. | These have’ dried the soil very rapidly and in some places the grain is burn- ed. These conditions appeared first where there was careless farming and dn poor land. South Dakota is very spotted. The Jim River Valley shows the greatest damage. This extends from Huron to a little north of Aberdeen, where there has been but a little rain recently.! Many fields have dried out and show the effects of the intense heat. There are, however, some good fields in this territory and with cool weather and; sufficient moisture, the conditions would be greatly improved. Except inthe southern part of that state, fre- quent rains are nee In Minf&esota conditions are gener-| ally favorable. This is also true of North Dakota. with the exception of] the territory south of the main line of| tue aurea kacite tom Dickinson west to the Montana line. This latter territory has also suffered froin drought and heat. | Montana kas recently had very heavy rains and in some sections has} wonderful prospects. The southeast-| ern part of the state, however, has not had sufficient moisture and this, com- bined with the extreme heat, has dam- aged a considerable area. We have had a few reports of black rust, but with the exception ‘of two or three instances, we find this is noth ing but ordinary leaf rust. We know of two or three small areas in Min- nesota where winter wheat has been slightly affected by black rust, but this condition is not serious. Red rust is to be found in various parts of the) northwest, Spring wheat is heading one early. Its condition is high except in the dry areas where it is heading, Short. Should extremely hot weather continue wheat would no doubt sutfer. Barley and oats are very spotted! and in the dry districts are heading short. ‘ Rye is almost ripe and will be har- vested very early. The hot weather has forced it at the filling stage and its general condition is not quite. as favorable as two weeks ago. The corn crop shows one of the besi Prospects in years. This is true even in the drier districts, Flax seeding is practically complet- ‘ed. There is a little being done, how- ever, in the south. With few excep- tions the condition of the flax is about j torney having already been secured-- an average.
