ne BISMARCK DAILY TRIBUNE rejoice that some genius inaugurated “Mothers’ Day.” I quite agree that every day should be a mothers’ day, but constituted as we are it is very easy to take our greatest blessings as a matter of course, yea, even never come to a full appreciation of them. Many and many.a child grows forgetful of mother and mother’s love. The travail of soul is not confined to the hour of birth. Very largely she is indeed what the Master’s mother is often called “Mater Dolorosa,” for she sorrows much through all the ‘years. So many watchful moments; so many anxious hours; hopes long deferred—and often blasted; that deep pain of sympathy as she A | Ly > NANA SLUALSIINIPAWH = Y] enters into the innermost recesses of the life of her offspring ; keenly sensitive to every force that plays upon the life she loves so well and often powerless to ward and fend; how little of this is really known by the children so cared for. So the day set apart by custom and by proclamation, tends to turn the eyes of the roving and forgetful back across the years to the old home and that which made it so dear and blessed, the patient, loving mother. And if now and then because of it, some dear heart is cheered with a bit of the sunshine of love and appreciation, if the weakening cords that bind heart to home are strengthened, if the sweet influences and tender associations are flashed anew upon the soul, then is it all worth while. God pity the man who has never known a mother’s love and care. Whose infant ears never listened to the crooning of her lullaby; who never knelt at a mother’s knee to learn the goodness of God, and snug- gled down in a mother’s arms to sink into sleep and rest.’ His life is poorer indeed, that he only knows by hearsay, what others know of sweet experience. But God pity more the child who has known a mother but not a mother’s love. Who can look back on nothing that makes the name of mother sound of heaven. Such mothers there have been, such mothers there may be. And perhaps this wide observance of “Moth- cr’s Day,” with its glorification of all those tender and blessed quali- ties of sacrifice and devotion and purity and love, will kindle in the heart of many a girl and young woman the splendid ambition to: be- come a mother, so reverenced and so loved, that all the labor and tra- vail will seem to be but a prelude of the blessed time when, in the glow of the westering sun, she shall gather to her soul the love and adora- tion of those who have risen to call her blessed, and lulled and cheered by that devotion, pass to her great reward.
