He asserted that the bank had not taken n single step toward compliance with State Examiner Waters‘ orders, QUESTION OF RESERVE Sheets further asserted that even on Attorney Lemke’s showing the Scan- dinavian-American bank was proven at thig moment to have hundreds of thousands of dollars less than no re- serve. Judge Bronson called the at- terney’s attention to an item in Mr, Lemke's statement to the effect that the bank had $850,000 cash on hand. Sheets retorted that the same report showed $616,000 due other banks, and that deposits from other banks, which might be checked out any moment, could not under the laws of North Da- kota be carried as legal reserve. He declared Lemke's very statement showed that the bank now has more than $200,000 less than no legal re- serve. Sheets declared that the item of $20,000 covering furniture and fix- tures, carried by the bank as an asset, was $2,000 in excess of the amount legally allowed for furniture, fixtures and banking house, and that the Scan- dnavian-American bank did not own its banking house. He also declared this item to be $7,000 in excess of what these fixtures could be replaced for, according to the report of a reput- able Fargo architect. He explained at length what was {meant by the kiting of paper, telling ‘how emergency loans from a Duluth bank were made on collateral con- sisting largely of the Same sort of aper which the banking board had sind in the Fargo bank, with the understanding that the credit so ob- tained, for the alleged purpose of ring the bank's resources up to {a point where it would nd inspec: jtion, was not to be drawn upon. Thatcher followed the report of his detailed examination with sundry comments upon which Mr. Lemke laid great stress. Mr. Thatcher supported the Scan- dinavian-American bank’s contention that the Consumers’ United Stores Co. were made to individuals and not to the corporation, and that they were not excessive, NEWSPAPERS WERE IN BAD Lemke did admit that the league, newspaper syndicate loan was an ex- cessive one and that it should be Famous Old Recipe tor Cough Syrup quick results. that theyean save two-thirds of the money uétially spent fdr congh pre tions, by using the well-known old re for making cough svrup, at home. for pronipt results. 1t ta’ eit hold usniully stopping an ordinary cough in } 24 lours or less, Get 2% ounces of Pinex from any druggist; pour it into a pint botile and add plain granulaicd sugar syrup to | make a full pint. Lemke’s line of reasoning was that while legally the bank’s\reserve might. be impared, in fact it was following a practice common among other banks of ignoring the state with respect to not carrying items to other banks as legal reserye.
