GENERAL DEMAND FOR SOLUTION OF HOUSING PROBLEM Sentiment Growing in Favor of Action by Commercial Club The housing problem in Bismarck daily becoming more acute, It is timated that at least 100 families are now putting up with makeshift quar- ters, or are finding homes elsewhere, while awaiting an opportunity to find a dwelling of any kind here. To date no organized effort has been made to improve this situation. There appears now, however, a general demand ‘that {something be done, and it is probabie that within the next week or two the Commercial club will call the business men of the’ city together in an effort to organize a holding company, which will undertake the erection of at least fifty homes in the capital city to ba r@idy for occupancy in early spring. To build fifty homes even of the most modest type an investment of $200,000 will be required, It is argued, however, that capital so invested will earn at least percent clear after paying all charges, including manage- ment, and that the returns to the cit from the satisfactory housing of fiftv families 1 be far greater than this Potatoes RED RIVER OHiOS—Direct to consumer in lots of five bushels or more at $1.75 ner bushel, f. 0. b. car. advance after removed from car. It is possible that a considerable saving could be effected in this\manner in Bismarck, although building costs ave much higher here, Rents have neve¥ been higher in Bismarck. Apartments of one or two rooms and bath are renting for $45 to $65 per month, and dwellings which are modern at all are bringing from $80 to $50 per month, Taxes are high and promise to be much higher, and purely from an investment standpoint rental properties are not regarded as. highly desirable. It is urged, however, that the situation has reached a point where the welfare of the whole city is affected; and that if Bismarck hopes to grow and to supply the labor which must be had if its industries are to succeed, homes must be provided. ‘The Commercial club has undertaken no large project for the betterment of Bismarck since the signing of the armistice released its energies for fn- ternal improvement, and there is 2 very general demand among the mem- bers that the organization immediate- iy apply, its resources to the solution of He city’s most pressing problem.
