SE —That’s Our Middle Name JOHNSON. ‘CLOSES _ SPEECHES IN WEST || St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 20.—Senator | Hiram W. Johnson planned ta close | | his speech-making tour of the middle west presenting arguments against the unqualified approval of the league of nations covenant with three ad- dresses in the Twin Cities today. a At noon he addressed a large and | enthusiastic gathering at the Metro- politan opera house. | “T care nothing for a man who will | | not listen to both sides of an impor- tant question and I care less for a| man who rafuses to form an opinion | and take a positive stand in regard | | to a vital issue,” said Senator John- | son. “This is a time when men cannot | | halt, hesitate and pussyfoot. They | must take sides on the league of na- | tions issue because it is the most im- | portant question submitted to the | | American people for decision since the \j civil war. “On one side is the path leading to | sinister diplomacy of old world poli- | tics. On the other lies the narrow | path of pure Americanism. “The issue is American and I am an | || American.” Ordering One's Life. Take time to scrutinize your Ife. LEARN TO TURN CORNERS PROPERLY One of the things that many motorists have great diffi- culty in learning to do properly is turning corners. It is difficult to coast around a corner at low speed, and if high speed is used the car goes too fast. The novice driver | should practice going into second speed just before he | reaches the corner he is to turn, and then drive around at slow speed. Another detail every driver should learn and practice is the matter of signalling. The law states that the driver | shall signal in some unmistakable manner which way he is going to turn. The left-hand drive makes this easy. If the, | operator is going to the left he should hold his arm out in a horizontal position. This indicates to those back of him they should not come up behind him on that side. When making a right turn the car should be run close to the curb and the signal given by waving the hand in a small circle | with a forward swing, as if to say: “Come on up on this side, I’m going to turn the corner.” The “come on” motion is a prescribed by law, but has become a custom of the road. If a sudden stop is necessary the hand should be held Service that insures Continuous Satisfactory Use of Your Car eee _—_—_——_ A ROW OF (S)HEROES - While we are giving three cheers for the Khaki let’s give as many for | the Gingham. Then, if no special cause of trouble appears we put it on the line to see if it will take a charge. But if there is plain indication of serious trouble we open the battery up and find out exactly what’s what.
