PAGE 8 BURLEIGH FARIS. ASSESSED UP TO $44.00 PER ACRE Marked Increase in Valuations Results From League’s Tax Scheme san Approximately $277,000 will be re- quired by the county to be raised from the 1919 tax assessments. About $70,- 000 will probably be needed by the city and an additional $70,000 for the city schools. The assessed valuation of the coun- ty is about $35,000,000 and of the city $7,000,000. It is estimated by city and county officials that the city will require a ten-mill tax levy, the city schools another ten mills, the county an eight-mill levy and it is thought! probable, say county officials, that 2% mills will be levied by the state. This will make a levy for all purposes somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 mills. The county required $200,000 last year. A large portion of. the asked increase is due to the $60,000 expended for grasshopper eradication this year. D., July 31.—Captain Wiliam O’Neill, South Dakota’s oldest sailor, is.dead at the age of 98 years. His death brings to a close a picture- sque and interesting life, more than a third of of which was spent in South Dakota. O’Neill was born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 14, 1821,. He became a sailor and traveled to ports in all parts of the world for a number of years. After’a time, he tired of the sea, and secured a position as accountant in Quebec in the Bank of British North America. There he remained for thir- ty-nine years, In 1883, at the age of 62 still possessed of the spirit of ad- venture, he came to the then new land of the Dakotas, settling at Bowdle, near which town he filed on a home- stead. Early in the days of statehood, he was a member of the legislature for Walworth county, and afterward was county judge of Walworth county. But he ever retained his iove of the water, and it was his greatest pleasure to design sailing vessels. He designed many a vessel that won rame as a fast sailer in inland races. The Ballyhoo, which was built by him in Aber- deen and sailed by him in a_not- able race on the Big Stone in 1906, when he was 85 years old, and Stone lake, Minnesota, was one of his most prominent -achievements. Other famous boats designed and built by him were the Shannon, the Enid and the Tom Savers. Last year he started work on another yacht, which he called the Liberty Bell. It was launched at Khig Stone lake this year, and it is be. lieved over- exertion in the construc- tion of the Liberty Bell hastened the ‘old captain's death. Mrs, O'Neill died at Bowdle twenty years ago, aged 70. O’Neill is sur- vived by three sons, an adopted son, and one daughter. Captain O'Neill is said to have been the oldest Mason in South Dakota. 'He attended the first meeting of a Masonic lodge ever held in Aberdeen. LUMBERJACK FINDS DAY OF FREE SNACK IS PAST Marquette, Mich, July 31—The day of free board in Northern ‘Mich- igan lumber camps has passed, as Many itinerant’ woodsmen from Min- nesota and Wisconsin have sadly been forced to admit. For years, there. was an unwritten law observed by lumber corporations in this section that the drifting class of workers should ibe fed at the ex- pense of the companies. These “free i lunch counters“ cost lumber concerns ; thousands of dollars. This year a new arrangement has ‘been put into effect. Lumberjacks no longer are paid a monthly wage, in- cluding board. They are paid by the day and are ouvliged to pay 36 cents for each of their meals. “Strangers” are allowed ‘o eat at the lumber camps, provided they have 35 cents. The pay as you enter rule also is enforced, BOARD OF EQUALIZATION The city commission will sit at the icity hall as a board of equalization | Pittsburgh ..
