‘ a SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 1918. ‘BISMARCK EVENING TRIBUNE TRIBUNE FINANCIAL DEPARTMENT OUIETON MART MARKS LIBERTY LOAN HOLIDAY Activity Centers on ‘Speculative Issues; Strong Fundamental Condition New ‘York, 'N. Y., Aprit:26.—In de. ference to the liberty day demonstra- tion, dealings on the stock exchange today were restricted to the two hours in the morning. In that briet period, however, the market again manifested firm to strong fundament- al conditions, although activity and strength centered chiefly in speculat- ive issues. Low priced specialties hitherto neg- lected were taken up by pools at gains of one to two points, the rise in iso- lated instances extending .to greater lengths, Representative industrials and rails moved only moderately, al- though United States steel and Read- ing scored extreme gains of a point. Among the more noteworthy chang, es were Superior steel, malting prefer- ved, corn products and Philadelphia company, at gains of 2% to;4 points. Tobaccos, motors and oils also hard- ened. , Offsetting features included Gulf steel at a recssion of six points from its recent material rise. Sales amounted to 150,000 shares. General market developments em- braced another sharp break in Italian exchange, lires approaching their low record of )896. The recurrent weak- ness in these remittances was ascrib- ed to speculation in bills on Rome. The February statement ofthe Bal- timore & Ohio railroad, showing an- other large deficit in net returns and advices from Washingtan indicating ithe. placing of additional large orders lor railway equipment were among the other -features of general inter- est. londs were active, but without hiarked change, all the liberty group stiffening. -Total sales (par value) Agbregated .$5,150,000. United States ‘bonds (old issues) were unaltered on call. NEW YORK STOCK LIST. ! Chicago, T., April :26.—Prospects for smaller acreage together with un- favorable weather gave the corn market today a decided upward swing closed firm, % to 2%c net higher, with May 127% ‘and July 158 to 153%. Oats finished to %e up, and provis- ‘fons varying from 20c decline to a rise of 25e. Expected reduction of corn acreage was ascribed largely to the continued cold and rain which has delayed plant- ing and to shortage of seed corn. It Was ,said also that increases of wint- er wheat and oats acreage had been to a material degree at the expense of corn. Besides receipts today were not large, and were being sold readily at full prices, low grades in particular being in excellent demand for distill- ing purposes.. Wespite the fact that considerable realizing on the part of holders was encountered, no import- ant setbacks took place, notwithstand. ing comparative weakness of oats, The outlook for oats med to be for the largest acreage on record Slowness of eastern demand acted al- so as a decided handicap on the bulls, and checked sympathy with the up turn in corn. Provisions were irregular, but the average level did not alter. Belgian orders to be filled served as a sus- taing influence. Option 127% 127% 1 1ST 12% 1 Open High Low Corn— May .... duly ....
