Butterfield and all the deck officers of the American steamship Florence H. .now are believed t: have lost their lives when that shin was destroyed by an explosion April 17 while off the French coast. A list of survivors received here today by cable from the American corsul at Brest does not contain their names It also shows that only two of the engine rom oficers escapel unin- jured, the others being reported as badly ‘burned, A checking up of the cable list with the record of the crew filed with the United States shipping «cim- mision here when the Florence H. sailed, shows that out of 57 men in the civilian crew, twenty nine are dead dr mising, twelve are in hospi- tals badly burned, two are slightly burned and only thirteen escaped un- injured. : ; The Florence H. sailed from Piil- adelphia March 30 with cargo, part of which was explosives. A recent ca- ble advice from Paris said the ex- plosion was believed to have ‘been caused by a bomb planted on the ship before she sailed. LEAGUE'S AID I$ DECLINED Cummings, Proposed Candidate for Senator Does Not Like Nonparty. Attitude St! Paul, Minn., . April 27.—Repre- sentative James Cummings of ‘East Grand Forks, who was indorsed for Minnesota state senator from Polk county by, the Nonpartisan league, has declined the. indorsement of the league. ' In a letter to Chas. W. Barines, campaign manager of the league. Mr. Cummings declares he has no use ofr the policy of. the league managers in their attitude toward the government. “I have read of the conviction of officers of the league on charges of disloyalty in the courts of our state. It have not as yet observed that any of the persons convicted have lost their positions as officers” says the letter. RED CROSS SOCIETY : FORMED AT GACKLE The Red Cross ‘society which was organized here a little more than a week ago has now about’ two hun- dred’ members. The officers elected were, Mrs. John Dando, president; ‘Mrs. Arthur Newman, vice president; Mrs. A. G. Wilk, secretary; and Mrs. Jake Hummel, Treasurer. ‘Following the organization ar- rangements were made for raising funds for carrying on the work of the society, and a sale was planned. A piece of dressed wood 2x4 three feet in length brought $12 and a single weinerwurst on a string was struck off to the highest bidder at $4. It was altogether a loyal gathering. The ladies served refreshments, which ad- ded $89.35 to the exchequer of the so- ciety. ‘A play given by local talent and un- der the auspices of the Parents and Teachers’ association was given in the evening. The- proceeds from which, including the advertisements in p ed programs gave another $160.50, which was donated to the Red Cross. The society now has nearly $1,000 deposited in the local banks and the ladies ‘of Gackle are busy getting a building furnished and ready for active Red Cross work so soon as supplies can reach them.
