BISMARCK EVENING TRIBUNE GEN. BYNG KNOWS WHEN TO RETREAT AND FALLS BACK British Front Rests on a Well Chosen Line in Region of Recent Struggle. TERRITORY YIELDED IS THIRD OF THAT GAINED | PT London, Dec. ‘The ‘Reuter cor- respondent at British headquarters in France sends the following: “General Byng has realized Napo- leon’s definition of a general's great- est quality—‘to know when to retreat and do it” liberately and successfully upon a well chosen line which rules out the sa- lient made by Bourton wood, and should enable us to maintain our hold upon the captured length of Hinden- burg’s line against any pressure. “The territory we abandoned prob- ably is less than one third of the to- tal gained in General Byng’s great tank drive. The work of destroying everything valuable to the enemy was very thoroughly done.” SCHWAB SEEKS ADVANCE PAYMENT ON CONTRACTS Head of Bethlehem Munition Plant Can Not Secure Ade- quate Bank Support. ‘Washington, Dec. 7.— An advance payment on munitions and other con- tracts for the government was asked today by Chas. Recession Necessary. The falling back was made neces- sary by wedges driven into the salient last week by the Germans, which on several sectors threatened disaster to the British should they continue to hold their positions. From an arc ex- tending before Cambrai a distance of about eighteen miles the new British front has been lessened to a length of about ten miles with the bases rest- ing in the northern region of Moeu- vres and in the south near Gonnelieu. As a result of the backward move- ment, the Germans claim the reoccu- pation of GGraincourt, Anneux, Noy- elles and the woods and heights north of Marcoing, and that their uncon- ‘tested gain has been to a depth of about two and a half miles over a front of six and a quarter miles.
