», FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1917. BISMARCK EVENING TRIBUNE Christian Science: The Science of Christian Healing — Lecture on Christian Science Delivered by Authorized Speaker. . Professor Hermann S. Hering, C. member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, lectured at the Grand theater Thursday eeyning under the auspices of the Christian Science socie- spoke subsantially as follows: ty of this city. Professor Hering aaa Speaker introduced by Judge A. M. Christensen, who said, in ‘part: “I am not a Christian Scien‘ist, and cannot discuss ‘its religious doctrines, as_I do not sufficiently understand them. I have read some of the Christian Science publica- tions, especially the Monitor. And while IT might not have understood the church doctrine preached in its columns, I have had no difficulty in understanding the doctrine of 100 per cent Americanism preached on its editorial page. The Monitor preaches Americanism without a hyphen, and loyalty without an “if.” Tam glad to have an opportunity to welcome and present to you a worthy representative of this great Christian organization.” C ‘to the sick and sorrowing, once said: “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Have we always be: lieved that this invitation was extend ed to us? Have we accepted it? Have we known how to do so? Since the whole world is in such great need of a better means of heal- ing its sin, sickness, strife, sorrow and suffering than is in general use today, are not these questions of vital import to us, and should we not en- deavor to ayail ourselves of the oppor- tunity offered by the Master? From the Gospeis we learn’ that Christ Jesus, our Saviour, was the Great Physician, who has for all time set the standard of perfect healing before humanity. That many do not believe in his. Gospel, is due to the fact that they do not fully understand his teaching, especially the true na ture and philosophy of the so-called miracles which he performed. The records of his spiritual healing work asa part of his divine mission meet with dissent from many of the thoughtful people of today; although his ethical teachings are in a measure quite generally accepted even by ag nostics. The Gospels record many instances of the healing of physical disease by Christ Jesus. He restored a withered hand; he healed a cripple and a man born blind; he healed cases of paraly sis, leprosy, dropsy, hemorrhage, epi lepsy, violent insanity, and he raised the dead; although these modern terms are not always used in the Bible. In St. Matthew we read: “4nd Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and. healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went through out. all Syria; and they brought untc him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.” “and, behold, there came a leper and worshiped him, saying, ‘Lord, if ‘thou wilt, thou canst make me/clean- And Jesus put forth his band and touched him, saying, I will; be thor clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.” ‘Furthermore, he specifically com manded his disciples that they shoulé continue the- healing work, counsel ing them: 3 “and as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Hea the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils; freely ye have received, freely give.” “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth in me, the works tha I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatso ever ye shall ask in my name, that will 1 do.” Peter, Philip, Paul and other fol lowers healed paralysis, lameness, de formity, insanity and even raised the dead in connection with their mission: ary work. Indeed, healing was very generally practiced among the early Christians. TEACHINGS NOT UNDERSTOOD. Many have always helieved these teachings and works, but they have not presumed to understand them much less have they thought even te attempt to: repeat them. They have accepted the Bible, but have not ap prehenied practically much of its in spiring ‘truth. Yet even a partial rec cognition of the demands made by ow Master’s: teachings upon our life an¢ conduct, reveals their supreme import ance, and their redemptive greatness » these questions must appeal to all thoughtful Christians: Is it possible for Jesus’ teachings to be obeyed today? Are they true or not! If not true, where is the basis of Christianity? If true, why are not their healing demands fulfilled? May jt not be because they are not under stood ? ‘Believers in the Bible cannot ignore the fact that spiritual healing was ac complished during Jesus’ time by him self and by his disciples, and later by his followers for several ‘centuries Admitting that this healing occurred we can but see that it must have been effected through te operation of some law; and that there must. have been a Principle and a Science back of it. Moreover, it is very evident that if this divine Principle and Sei ence which Jesus used, were known and applied pate the same healing would follow. a yy rbelfevers in the Bible and in what are called miracles are con- fronted with the fact that this heal ing is taking place today, in their very midst and through purely spiritual means, which fact can be determined by any sincere investigator; yet they deny the availability of spiritual pow- er over material things because they do not understand spiritual law and the Principle which operates in Chris- tion healing. HEALING DONE SPIRITUALLY. Let us then consider this Science of Christian healing, | its Principle and, HRIST JESUS, while ministering fore make little effort to relate spir ture of existence and the relationship between the inner world of thought ve the greatest stumrbIng block to an -2nce called force, —Advertising Publicity ‘ S. B. of Concérd, New Hampshire, The First rule, and see how these may. be ap plied today. At the outset we shou. recognize the fact that a careful study of the gospel. records shows that Christian healing was effected through spiritual and not material means; therefore, it can be explained, under stood. and practiced. only spiritually This is a point which should be clear ly seen, for, there are many who dis believe in Christian healing as well as in Christian Science healing ‘because such healing cannot be explained on the basis of physical or medical. sci ence, These opposite methods have nothing in common, and it is:manifest that spiritual things must be discern. ed. Since this healing is accomplish- ed spiritually, no other means being used ,it can be discerned and demon strated only spiritually; that is, on a spiritual basis ,;which means a meta physicat basis, a basis beyond physics, and therefore apart from matter. Here is where the trouble lies, for it is very difficult for most of us to see how physical results can. be o>tained through spiritual means. To the ma- terially minded, matter and materia: law are supreme, and they havé little belief in any. power beyond physics, or apart from matter, and yet less under standing of it. ‘Metaphysical or spirit ual power is thought of as belonging to the supernatural, which many peo ple reject, associating it as they do with mysticism and superstition Many do not believe in the efficacy o! prayer for they faii to understand how a mere mental effort can bring about a physical change. They either deny he spiritual healing of the early church or declare ii to have been ¢ mere phenomenal exhibition of divine or super-human power, and they there itual power to present human needs. One cause for this difficulty is the iailure to apprehend the mental na and the outer world of phenomena This is due mainly to the prevailing velief in matter, which is conceded to anderstanding of Christian healing ind to belief in the Bible itself. Let as then consider this question, though very briefly, with the hope of over- coming this stumbling block, and let as do so first, from the viewpoint ot che physical science, on which all agree. KINETIC NATURE OF MATTER. To human sense there is a creative, f* i awhich is:,that: which constitutes real governing, controlling power or influ- and a substance zalled matter, in which this force seems to inhere and turough which it acts. Yet matter has always been be ieved to be an indestructiblé stu‘f, substance of entity separate and apart ‘rom force or energy. Recent research and discoyery. in che physical sciences, however, have cendered this view untenable, for the Anit of matter, called the atom, which always has been supposed to be tne smallest possible division of; matter substance, is now affirmed by phy sicists to be itself composed of thou sands of what are called electrons. fhese electrons are intinitismal cen ters of electrical energy composed ‘6! Sosilive and-negative cnarges of elec ricity vibraing with great velocity t is thus disclosed that this atom, the vasis of physical substance, is in fact . manifestation of force, and, there fore, atomic aggregation, or wnat ic zalled material structure and growth, is-a form of manifestation of energy or force. ‘ To illustrate:. If we take any ma erial object.and reduce it by means of mechanical and chemical processes o its ultimate*theoretical fimits, we ‘rst destroy what seems to be the abject ,then we destroy the residue ‘alled organized matter, reducing it o molecules, then to atoms; (then i! ve separate the atoms into their con stituent electrons, there remains noth ing of our material object but a form of energy, a ineoretical manifestation of force in which every vestige of the sharacteristics of matter and of the 2Uject has completely disappeared What may be the nature and history of a separated, a freed electron whict 3 all that remains, is something for he physicist to puzzle over; and he is uzzling over it for the solution is not o be found in physics but.in meta- »hysics. Thus from the pnysical stan<point. natter is seen to be the appearance, »xternalization or pro.ection or force of energy, and consequently what w@ ouch, hear, see, smell, or taste is in tact force. To illustrate: What we ouch or feel is a form of pressure which is force: what we hear is the vi oration called sound which is force; what we see is the vibration called light, which is force; what we smel. and taste isa form of chemical energy oy vibratidn, waich is force. Thus matter is a manifestation of force and is not what it has been supposed ‘o be. MENTAL NATURE OF EXISTENCE This, then, brings us to the view yoint of materialistic phisosophy anc ysychology, from which it further ap gears that the mental faculties whict we call sight, hearing, and the res. ire also oul different forms of vibra fon; consejueatly, so-called materia! sight, hcaring, touch, taste, smell are themselves mental impressions super induced by force or energy in some ‘orm. In every case it is not matte or an object which cognizes or is cog nized but a mental phenomenon ex perienced in consciousness. For we are conscious of existence mentally hence the thimgs-we are conscious 0! ire mental impressions objectified— sense phenomena. Thus existence, to gether with all iis activities, appear ances and phenomena, is in fact whol ly mental. ‘Christ Jesus assuredly proved the mental nature of matte: and existence when he walked on the water, stilled the tempest, multiplied the loaves and fishes, healed the sick raised the dead and overcame other material conditions. When we concede the mental na ture of existence, we take one of the first) steps in the understanding and practice of Christian healing, for we have overcome one of the greatest Py stumbling’ blocks. We can then see -hat whatever? enters our existence, anters it mentally, as a state of con sciousness, and consequently disease. lisaster and deathare but experien n consciousness, What else can they be? Where else can they be? What would they be to us if not in con sciousness? Here it becomes important to note | that the consciousness which has < ‘tinite dimensional concept of exist ence, and thus whica cognizes mater. ially, evil and discord, Si. Paul called the ‘carnal mind,” which he said “is enmity against God,” in other words in God's opposite. Since sin, disease and death are its inevitable products, Mrs. Eddy further defines it as ‘mor tal mind,” thus distinguishing it from the immortal divine Mind which is conscious only of good. She also makes, this noteworthy statement, “Phyaital force and mortal mind are one,” (Science and Health, p. 484.) Thus giving the key to the mental na ture or mortal existence and the rela. tionship between consciousness and physical phenomena. We thus see that all discordant con. ditions of whatever name and nature exist solely as phenomena and experi: 2nces of the caral mortal mind, as states of mortal consciousness. There fore they are wholly mental and noi only can but should, be dealt with mentally. Hence, in order that they may be healed, it is very evident tha: a change must be brought about in the human consciousness, a transforma: tion by the renewing of the mind, as St. Paul puts it. How can tais be done? TRANSFORMED By TRUTH. - This human consciousness, while embracing the beliefs of evil, disease, materiality and mortality, has at the same time faculties of knowing what Thus it is a kind of clearing house where good can be recognized and applied to evil, where Truth can be known and error be corected, and where harmony can be established. In other words, a plane on which the real can reach the unreal; a transitional stage of experi ence in which transformation take: place, through the reaewal of the mind; an imperfect con: usness, still influenced by error, but one tc which the ving Christ can come healing it of its eroneous beliefs anc renewing it with the mind of Christ This spiritual awakening will event aally so transform tuais consciousness chat all error will be destroyed and ihe perfect, spiritual, harmonious con sciousness of the real man be estab lished. It thus becomes necessary tc consider the nature of absolute Truth and to. distinguish between what, is real'and what is unreal. Truth is-defined.as actuality, tha: as distinguished from. phenomenal be ‘Theretore,-by its very nature is infinite, without dimension: or limitations; infinitely intelligent omniscient; infinitely powerful, omni potent; infinitely present, omnipres ent; it is indestructible, eternal. Thi infinite. Truth is.absolute,.fundament al, self-existing, harmonious and per fect, the source of all real being. Thu: it is the infinite Principle and is iden. tified in Christian Science as Spirit che indestructible ‘substance; as Mind the infinite consciousness; as Soul, in cluding all spirityal identity ‘and in dividuality; as Life, the creating ant; ‘spower.’of*all activity al ty; ‘ay the supreme Ego, the conti great?I AM, the Betig, who was ant! is and shall be; and thus the one iti ite and only true God; the God wh. is declared in the Scriptures to bc the God of Truth whom St. John de flines as Love, saying, “God is love.’ The universe which is created anc forever sustained by God, must be like its Creator, since like begets like hence man, the real man, as definec in the first chapter of Genesis, is no material, but spiritual consciousness not evil, but good; not ntortal, bu immortal. Thus we see that all real ity, every expression of the ‘divine activity, all that really is, is infinite indestructible, unchanging, perfect aarmonious spiritual; consequentl; whatever has noi these qualities is nc part of Truth, not real. Hence, mat ter, mortal mind and all the phenom ana of material sense, being unlike -he divine reality, are unreal. On thi: scientific basis of infinite Truth wo are enabled to distinguish at any time between what is absolute, divine, real, and what is merely relative, human unreal. TRUTH AND ERROR DISTIN GUISHED. Rightly apprehending the distinc tion between the real and the unreal we are in a position to grasp the fac that all discord, disease, disaster anc death are the products of false sense and that they are to be healed, as Je sus said, by knowing the truth. They certainly can not be healed spiritually 30 long as they are believed to be physical or mental realities. We can aot correct a mistake until it is recog nized as such. Even as we are accus omed to do in piysical sciense, st we must do in metaphysical Science ‘or only in this way can we begin tc separate the wheat from the tares, dis -inguish between the actual and the seeming, the real and the unreal,. it, auman consciousness, without whicl step, Christian healing cannot be sc} antifically achieved. Thus we overcome the second grea stumbling block in Christian healing and to aid in clearing up this point will say ,that the Christian Scientisi recognizes and knows the unreality 0 che appearance called a sick man, a: well as of any other discord, in pre cisely the same way as a mathematic ‘an knows that two times two does noi make five, even though he sees i. written out; for he knows they make four, regardless of the appearance. I is his business to know this as ¢ mathematician. So the Christian Sci antist knows that there is really ne sick man there to be healed, but mere 'y an erroneous concept or state o! sciousness to de corrected; and i his business to know this as a Chris tion Scientist, for Jesus said very plainly: “Judge not according to thc appearance, but judge righteous judg ment,’ which means the judgment 0 Truth. Christian Science makes i possible for us to begin to do this, anc we have never been able to do it be fore; for until Mrs. Eddy discoverer Christian Science, we did not know the nature of the divine reality and o! eee none e enn n nese ee Be ay in the Bible cannoi ignore the fact that spiritual healing was accomplished during Jesus’ time by himself and by his disciples, and later by hi lowers for several centuries. fol- Admitting that this healing occurred, we can but see that it must have been effected through the operation of some law, and thal there must have been a Principle and a Science back of it. More- over, it s very evident that if this divine Principle and Science which Jesus used were known and applied today, the same healing results would follow.” pee wwoow wenn new wenn nnn nnn nnn nnn ees, the human consciousness that we might differentiate accurately between the appearance and the actuality. Christian ‘Scientists are frequently criticised for not believing aJl they see. They happen to know better, ev- en as the astronomer who does not be- lieve in al celestial appearances since he knows better. Lecause of their limitations, Truth cannot be perceived through the five physical senses. Truth is discerned only through the understanding, which is a faculty entirely apart from physical sense. This point shquld be clearly seen. To illustrate: We do not see the truth of a mathematical problem through the sense of sight, or oy merely looking at the figures used. The truth lies back of the figures and is discétnablé only through mathemat- ical understanding. So too, the real dod; the real man, the real universe are not perceived turough, the five vhysical senses, Dut only through spiritual understanding. | This under- standing, the perception and apprehen- sion of divine Truth, Christian Sc: ence now makes possible to all. HEALING BY RIGAT MENTAL ACTION. Since Christian healing i thus ac- complished through a transformation, 2 correction, a change of conscious-) aess, it is done mentally and must re- quire some action of thought. There- ‘ore, we need to consider what think- ing is, in order that we may think wight, for we know that a wrong be- viet cannot be corrected with a wrong | hought. Truth alone corrects error, ind we must learn to think Truth if we wish to heal spiritually, for God s Truth and is Spirit, hence Truth is Spirit and spiritual. All will admit that thinking is the exe of intelligence or mind, and chat real thinking is the activity of veal Mind. leal Mind, as we have seen, is the divine consciousness, the nfinite intelligence or Truth. There- ‘ore real thinking is the activity. of liyine Truth in consciousness,” the activity involved in being con she truth, which is right kno: ti mowing of Truth. Obviously we! in inow only Truth, we can never know arror. For example: We can never iow that two times two make five, yecause they do not; we can only be- ieve that they do. Thus we can nev- or know anything that is wrong; evil or material, we can never know sin, lisease or @edth; we can only be- ieve them. Since disease is an untrue experi- ce in the human mind, in order that t may be healed, it is evident that the wroneous concept must be correctedy ind to do this, divine Truth must be srought to bear upon the error in ‘onsciousne -Lerror is corrected by applying math- matical truth to it. How is this eor- ection of human errors to be made spiritually? Whenever we think ightly of any truth, that truth is pres mt with us in consciousness, becomes tive in thought by virtue of that hinking. For cxample, when we think ightly of the multiplication table, the ruth of mathematics is present with is in our thought;and becomes active here in consequence. ‘This is not he case, however, when we do not hink rightly of it. In a similar way when we think rightly of divine Truth —Life, Spirit, Love, God—this Truth 8 present with us in consciousness ind becomes active there by virtue of his right knowing. You will recall that St. Paul, in writing to the Ephesians regarding he one God and Father, said: He is ‘through all, and in you all,” which neans everywhere present. Being in- inite, God is infinitely everywhere. Chus He is already present, “‘a very dresent help in trouble.” He has only o be known. We have but to become conscious of Him. As by knowing any ruth we reflect that truth and be- ome conscious of it, so by knowing iod, we reflect Him and become con- scious of Him. ‘Thus it is through the ight knowing of God, which Christian science makes possible today, that di- vine Truth and Love are reflected in he human consciousne: 0 action tuere and so are brought to sear upon our human errors and prob- ems. Thus a change of cons S- 1ess takes place and healing results. As physical darkness disappears when ight is brought to bear upon it, so he mental darkness of despair, dis- 2zase and death disappe ight of Christ, Truth, is brought to dear upon it by Leing reflected in con- o sciousness through right, spiritual snowing. This knowing of Truth is real con- sciousness, of the eal man, God's man. It is commun- on with our heavenly Father-Mother- tod, infinite Love. It is true Christian yrayer, “Not my will, but thine be lone,” the almost constant prayer of he Christian Scientist, and suca pray- name is answered in healing , reforming the sinner and supplying all our human needs. A NECESARY DISCRIMINATION. This scientific Christian healing is hristian Science healing and involves he knowing of spiritual Truth, the! ecognition of material error as error ind the application to the specific, an- idoting, divine truth which corrects ind heals it. Therefore this healing s not hypnotism, not mental sugges- ion, not the mere influence of one hu- nan mind over another, not mental lomination, or the exercise of the hu- nan will, commonly called will-power; ind for a right apprehension of Christ- ‘an Science healing this fact must be clearly seen. I will illustrate: When a mathematiczan corrects an er- ror in computation it is not his will which makes the correction, but the mathematical trutn waich he knows and applies to the error tarough math-! As when a mathematic: ' , brought in-| s when the; | i | ematical understanding. The cor- recting power is inherent in the truth itself, not in the will of the mathe- matician. Will-power has nothing to do with the result, and would stand in the way if it were used. So, when asin or an ill is healed through Chris- tian Science it is not the will of the Christian Scientist that does the heal- ing, but the divine Truth which he knows and applies to the human er or through his understanding of Christian Science. The correcting and healing power is inherent in the truth itself, not in the will, of the Christian Scien! Will-power has nothing to do with the healing; it would stand in the way if it were used. * Jesus said: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth sha fake you free.” This is a seientt ) spiritual statement of the Principle'and meth- od of Christian healing made ‘by the Master, himself, and definitely dis- tinguishes Christian Science healing from hypnotism, magnetism, occult- ism, or mental suggestion in any form. The mental manipulator endeavors to secure control of the patient's mental- ity, to dominate it and superimpose upon it, will, purpose or desire; be it good or evil, right or wrong. This shows the great danger of that meth- od. Whereas the Christian Sciéntist, knowing the nature of God and the real man ‘to be spiritual and peét recognizes the diseased and sinful conditions as false, mesmeric states sciousness; and he applied’ his anding of divine Truth and the healing remedy; whith is ss safe and can never injure, for divine Truth and Love bless. Surely this infinite Love is adequate, is intelligent enough to supply all our needs; we have but to know it in order to reflect it. TRUE HUMANTARIANISM AND CITIZENSHIP. In their dealings with their fellowmen they are sympatheti kindly, and loving, endeavoring al- w to act with wisdom, discretion, and justice; therefore Christian Sci- entists are true humanitarians. The attitude of Chi n Scientists towards the war is inspired by th Christin ideals. They fully realize the tragedy of the world's turmoil but they believe strongly the truth of the Apostle’s saying that “all things work together for good to them that love God,” and they are confident that]- this great upheaval will cast out much evil and so make place for good. ‘They feel that the world is recogniz- ing the fulility of false ide motives, greed, revenge, i: ing the donination of autocratic gov- ernment and finding that the only right basis for the relationship and in- tercourse of peoples and nations is that of Principle, which shall rule hu- manity through true Christianity, jus- tice, equality, brotherly love. It is sad that the a/tainment of this higher basis of human relationship could not have come threugh the application of the teachings of Chri esug, rather than through this terrific convulsion and the exercise of brut? force. “Man's extremity is God's opportun ity,” and the Christian Scientist. tin’ in this conflict 2. tremendous oppor tunity for the exercise of all the hop faith and understanding, which knowledge of divine Truth and ciple gives them. Any one can learn of such healings; it is oc- curring constantly throughout the world wherever Christian Science 1 erature is read or the truth of Chris- tian Science is yoiced. Second, healing is effected through the effort of a person to apply the Principle and rule of Christian Sci- ence to his own problem. This is ac- complished by the study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, which is the key to the Bible, and by the application of the spiritual teach- ings in a scientific wa problem ‘be a case of other discord. This healing likewise results from the destruction of the erroneous concepts through the in- creased presence of divine Truth and Love in consciousness, which is then externalized in better health and morals. Mych healing is being accomplished in this manner and any one can help himself by applying the teachings of Christian Science accurately and pa- tiently. I emphasize the words accu- rately and patiently because some have been disappointed that they have ed the desired results im- y; but if they had been as urate and impatient in the study and application of mathematical sci- ence, for example, as in their attempt- ed use of Christian Science, _ they would have obtained correspondingly ij mathematical results. ed consciousness is then in improved health and Lk istian Science is an exact Science, sed upon absolute Principle which requires perfect application to secure perfect results. lspecially must this application be made spiritually. When one thinks of Truth, knows Truth, and reflects Truth, conscious- ness becomes more spiritual, more il- luminated with divine light, and ev- erything included in it and to which it is directed is benefited thereby. In Christian Science. | treatment there is no effort at mental manipu tion, for the carnal, mortal mind, is not a factor in the healing work. The healing mind is the divine Mind and this being infinite and omnipresent, the knowing of the truth regarding the real man, together with the denial of the errors of mortal mind, brings the truth to bear upon the case, since Truth always identifies itself, whether the person is nearby or far away. Jesus healed the Centurion ervant and the nobleman’s son without being present with them, thus demonstrat- ing this truth. In like manner Chris: tian Scientists are healing many pa- tients who are at a distance from them, in obedignce to their M commands. Christian Science h results from an awakened conscious- ness produced by the Christ-mind, and neither time, distance, matter nor evil enter into it nor can they interfere with it. HEALING OF SIN Christian Science neais sin in the same manner that it heals sickness, by knowing the truth of perfect God and perfect man and thereby recog- -| nizing the fact (1) that evil is ‘the opposite of good, the absence of good, and thus a negative condition with- out Principle or power; (2) that it is a lie, “a liar, and the father of it,” as sus termed it; consequently it ex- ists in human consciousness only as a false belief of good; '(3) that it is no part of God's creation since in the infinity of good there can be no place for ¢' When Christian Science reaches the consciousness of the sin. ner, it shows him the deceptive char- acter of evil, and awakens him from the mesmeric dream of false appetites end pleasures in the bondage of wh he has been held. He is thus set free and evil no longer appeals to him. He ceas indulging in it because the de- sire for it has been destroyed by the presence and power of the Christ, Truth, the only healer of sin. The sinner does not lose anything when he is healed except an illusion. He gains what fs worth while, real man- hood, “the liberty of the children of God,” the joys of Spirit, than which there is no other real satisfaction. In his epistle to the Romans, St. Paul writes: “The good that I would do not; but the evil which I would not that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.” Note the distinction, if you please, which St. Paul makes between the man and the sin. In conformity with this state- ment of the great Apostle, Christian Science teaches that the evil is not the man and the man is never the evil, that evil is always apart from man and exists only in the degree that it is believed to be real by the deceived human sense. Thus it seems to dwell in us. When this separation can be made, when it can be seen that God, divine Love, is not the author of sin, disease and death. His opposites, and therefore that they are no part of man, our healing, whether of sin or disease, inevitably begins. It’ should be clearly seen, however, Christian Science healing reaches} that Christian Science healing is not -| sion of fh a mere mental method or mental pro- cess involving simply the entertain: ment and repetition of certain thoughts. Being scientific it demands accurate, intelligent, metaphysical dis- cernment and analysis and a correct application of its divine Principle, which must he done mentally, But above all it requires a clear conscious- n of the allness of God, Spirit, and His ideas, and the nothingness of His opposite, evil, matter and their be- which constitute the carnal This illumined consciousness, this healing consciousness, which may be acquired in a degree by anyone to- day, divine Love alone makes possi- ble, for divine Love, reflected through right knowing and right livéng, is the real ‘healer in Christian Science, the only one named by Mrs. Eddy, and the only one recognized by Chris- tian Scientists. The fact that Christian Scientists have not yet done all the wonderful works Jesus and his disciples did, nor have done all that they know is pos- sible through Christian Science, may be cause for regret but never for dis- couragement or criticism. They re- joice that Jesus’ works prove Chris- tian Science to be true, and they are grateful that Mrs. Eddy discovered the Science of Christian healing and gave it to the world for all to demon- strate in the degree that they under- .j stand it. LOVE FOR MRS. EDDY. The love and gratitude which Chris- tian Scientists feel toward Mrs. Eddy is not to be wondered at when ‘one takes into account the great good which has come into their lives as the result of her teachings, People are grateful to one who has helped them out of a serious difficulty, supplied some great need or rescued them from some disaster. How much more grate- ful should they naturally be to one who has made it possible for them to be healed of so-called incurable dis- ease, hopeless sorrow, the bondage of degrading sin, and who also healed them of agionicien and atheism by revealing to them the naturalness, simplicity and truth of the Bible teach- ings and the p bility of ‘their ful- fillment. The whole world is indebted to her for her scientific and spiritual inter- pretation of the Bible, especially the words and works of the Master, and for her demonstration of the truth of his teaching. In the face of the so- called higher criticism, the doubt re- specting the correctness of much Scripture teaching and the denial of the paggibility of stays root Jesus’ commands, Mrs. Eddy’s iproof tha the Bible {#strue stands out\as the Jreat- most significant actlevemdAat of e, for thereby the truth of anity and the rightness of its basis is scientifically established. This has never been done before. Mrs. Eddy early learned that the Bible is the word of God, the spiritual er of the ages. She turned’ to it for light and leading when human ways and means failed to give health and hope, and she was healed. In its inspired pages she found Christian Science, the spiritual fulfillment of | Jesus’, teaching and practice, ang dis- covered the Science of Christiantty. , Eddy did not a her'work M here until it was so estéplishedi@s to reniain intact and invidlate. “With wisdom and foresight she insured the safety of the Christian Science organi- zation and the preservation of the purity of her teachings by establish- ing ‘he Mother Church in Boston as the anchor of the Christian Science movement and by providing a Manual for the government of the Church and a Board of Directors to administer its affairs in accordance with this Man- ual, and in obedience to her instruc- tions. To Christian Scientists Mrs. Eddy is a living example of the triumph of faith in God, a faith deep and vital because rooted in spiritual experience. She knew God aright. She look¢d to divine intelligence and@ proved? that God is Mind. She was governed by spiritual law and proved that God is Principle. e looked to God for health and proved Him to be Life. She loved all mankind and proved that. God is Love. She gave her all for the “pearl of great price,” the knowl- edge of God, and offered it to all the world. I knew Mrs. Eddy personally, was associated with her on many oc- casions, and I know whereof I speak. FULFILLMENT OF MISSION. Christian Science is the renaissance of Christianity, the rebirth and re- establishment on a scientific, demon- strable ba of the Christianity which Christ Jesus taught and prac- ticed. It is the fulfillment of his mis- nging to the world salva- tion from sin, sickness and death. Its modest achievements of today prove the truth of its Principle and rule and enable any sincere seeker to begin to live it and be benefited by it. It is a clarion call to every aspiring heart to awaken to the present privilege of freedom and spiritual authority over human ills and to demonstrate that the day of human redemption is at hand. Mrs. Eddy writes: “When will Jesus’ professed follow- ers learn to emulate him in all his s and to imitate his mighty works? . . « It is possible—yea, it is the duty and .privilege of every child, man and woman—to follow in some degree the example of the Mas- ter by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness. Chris- tians claim to be his followers, but do they follow him in the way that he commanded? Hear these imperative commands: ‘Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heav- en is perfect!’ ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the g0s) creature!’ ‘Heal the sick’ and Health, p. 37.) Would Jesus have given these com- mands unless he had known them to be the demands of Truth and possible of fulfillment? Have you ever realized that an understanding of Jesus’ teach: ings and strict adherence thereto would remove from this world all sin, sickness, sorrow and suffering? Think of this, if you will, the next time you read the Gospels, and Christian Sci- ence will show you the way. since
