REX—FRIDAY AND SATURDAY To Joan Gray, fatherless and friendless, came the demand to make her choice either of the proprietor of a notorious dive of Dawson City, Klondike, or the human vermin which infested the place. She asked for ten minutes to think it over. It was granted—being the least consid- eration she might expect from Gold Dust Barker, owner of the dive, who had enticed her to Dawson City with the promise of a fabulous salary as a nurse. Sl g In ‘desperation she chose—-chose; | on the advice of Seattle Kate, the only person” ainong the crowd who showed the faintest indication of | friendliness. “‘Choose the crowd, kid,” said Kate. “I know Gold Dust Barker.” And Joan, reared in all the tenderness that a motherless girl could receive from a devoted father, chose the crowd. Hastily she donned the scanty at- tire worn by the dancing girls of the place, mingled in the crowd, and a few moments later had the frequent- ers of the saloon bidding against Gold Dust Barker for himself. She was won by Jim Blood, known as the Cur to his associates, because of his worthless and dissolute habits. But im Blood was the owner of the rich- est claim in the Yukon. And the spark of manhood that remained in him was fanned into flame by his adoration of the girl, and the two found redemption from the evil that beset them when Jim Blood's prayer to heaven to make him the man he once was was heard and answered. “Paid in Advance’ 'is a strong story, powerfully executed for the screen and enhanced by a cast of supporting players including William Stowell, as the leading man; Lon Chaney, Priscilla Dean, herself a Uni- versal star of well earned popularity; Joseph Gerard, Frank Brownlee and Bill Buress.
