Readers of ““The RE_ves NSE the World” in book form will recall in that remarkable story of California many people and situations that should provide rare opportunities for character portrayal. They talk of the league of nations, for the sel- fish reason that Germany needs it to protect her own people, who as a na- tion are put in this extremely un- strategical position by the turn of events. On the western front, Getman ap- prehensions are not so much on the grounds of invasion as they are from fear that the territory on the south bank of the Rhine .will be taken away from the republic as a bulwark for France. Germans have not given up Alsace-Lorraise in their own minds yet, and expect a plebiscite to decide the suzerainty of that disput- ed area. Little is ever said of Lux- emburg, but the other territory oc- cupied by the Entente troops must belong to Germany, Germans feel. Defense of this front, strangely, does not worry Germans nearly as much as the east. It may be because the occupation was agreed upon and was understood by the Germans, or it may be that the Germans feel they can settle tne matter satisfactorily and more fairly at the peace table. There is no talk of defense, at any rate, except by the league of nations, for which the Germans have great hopes. Danish claims in Schleswig-Hol. stein are the source of less feeling than any boundaries in which the Germans are likely to lose. Posters in bright colors everywhere pro- claim ““‘Schleswig is Deutsch,” but no one gets excited about them. Gen- eral feeling is that a’ plebiscite will decide that fairly, with portions of the ‘peninsula going to each country, but with the Kiel Canal still in Ger- man hands FOR SALE—Furniture for sale.
