Bemidji, unfortunately, has been the victim of a number of clever young fellows who by wearing the uniform of a soldier or sailor have taken advantage of patriotic citizens by obtaining subscriptions on one thing or another from which absolutely no return is being received. These activities are not only disgraceful to the men responsible but are humiliating to sold- jers and sailors too self-respecting to do such things and to everybody else. - . Some of the men who do #his sort of vending really have seen service, but the fact that one of them is in navy or army uniform by no means proves the validity of his demand for sympathy and gratitude expressed in silver coins, for more than a few of these exploiters of the public’s patriotism have never been even in a training camp, and to buy their worthless but- tons or cards is merely to encourage swindlers of a particularly mean variety. : That there are some real soldiers and sailors who since they were discharged have been unable to find work is true, unfortunately, and of course it is comprehensible, and there- fore pardonable, that they have resorted to this, the only im- mediately available method of which they know, to tide over a temporary emergency. When solicited by one of the uniformed peddlers the really good citizen, instead of handing over the quarter demanded and letting it go at that, will take the more troublesome course that conscience and a proper sense of civic responsibility dic- ‘tate. He will question the man in a way to show real interest in his welfare. If this is resented it will be clear proof that the man is either a swindler, disguised as a soldier or sailor and trying to get money on false pretenses, or a member of the other service who prefers mendicancy to honest work. If his response is such as to show a sincere desire to escape from a humiliating position, it is a good citizen’s duty to give, not the momentary relief of petty alms, but real help in the finding of honorable employment. It may be enough to tell the applicant of one or another of the several governmental and private bureaus that have been established to meet the needs of such cases. Better still, would it be if the good citizen could offer a job or point the road to one. Then the lending, not the giving, of a quarter or a few! dollars may be the true beneficence which “charity” so rarely is. SR How splendid it would.be if everyone alloted Victory loan notes would subscribe for the amount requested. This is exactly what will be done if our people will but for one moment give consideration to the conditions of the loan. They are to be paid four and three-quayters per cent for a periodl of but four years, on a security that has no equal and at the| same time they will be performing a patriotic duty. What a/ splendid opportunity. 0 In keeping with its progressive and enterprising spirit the Walker Pilot has installed a Linotype machine. The addition of the machine will enable The Pilot, already one of the state’s brightest weekly publications, to expand and even more fully cover the news field of its community. But there is one thing even a linotype cannot accomplish; it cannot improve the clever editorial paragraphs of Louise A. Dare. T ———— () ———— Major General Leonard A. Wood, who is often spoken of as a likely candidate for the republican presidential nomina- tion, is to visit Minneapolis April 18, and while there will make several speeches in behalf of the Victory Loan. SOLDIERS-SAILORS TOURING EUROPE. .An interesting letter from William Kalser, who at one time was Connect- ed with The Ploneer, has been re- ceived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kaiser, of Bagley. The letter follows: Montoir, France, My application for leave {8 on its way to headquarters and expect it back here within' four:or-five days. Will be leaving here before-this let- ter reaches you, with Sgt. Hart and Acting Sgt. Major, for Italy. We have our plans laid out as follows: We go from hereé to Parfl and catch the Paris Express which will take us down to Rome via the Alps Moun- taings and Florence. We are going directly through to Naples, - thus giving us the number of days we can spend seeing the sights, that is is- cluding travel time, From Naples we are going to Pompeif and Mt. Vesuvius, then back to Rome where we will spend the greatest amount of our time. From Rome to Florence and Pisa where we can see the lean- ing tower. If we.can possibly spare ‘the time, we will ‘also see Venice, but am afraid that our leave of ab- sence will have expired beforé that time. The American soldlers travel for one quarter rate in France which’ will make the care fare very light.
