RPESIDENT WILSON COMMENDS BIBLE T0 U. S. SOLDIERS Philadelphia, Aug. 17.—Out of the rush of his war-driven life President ‘Woodrow Wilson has taken the time to write a personal message to the soldiers and sailors of the American army and navy, commending to them the daily reading of the Bible. The message was written at the request of Robert B. Haines, Jr., sec- retary of the American branch of the Scripture Gift mission, whose of- fice is in Philadelphia, and will ap- pear on the front flyleat of an edi- tion of 75,000 copies of the New Tes- tament, beautifully illustrated in colors, and especially prepared for the men of the American army and navy. The president’s message follows: “The White House, Washington, July 23, 1917.—The Bible is the word’ of life. I beg that you will read it and find this out for your- self—read, not little snatches here and there, but long passages that will really be the road to the heart of it. You will find out it full of rea]l men and women not only, but also of the things you have wonder- ed about and been troubled about all your life, as men have been al- ways; and the more you read the more it will become plain to you what things are worth while and what are not; what things make men happy—Tloyal, right dealing, speak- ing the truth, readiness to give ev- erything for what they think their duty, and, most of all, the wish that they may have the real approval of the Christ, who gave everything for them; and the things that are guar- anteed to make men unhappy—sel- fishness, cowardice, greed and every- thing that is low and mean. When you have read the Bible you will know that it is the Word of God, pecause you will have found it the key to your own heart, your own happiness and your own duty. “WOODROW WILSON.” CAT ADOPTS SKUNKS Pierre, S. D., Aug. 17.—On the Pit- lick ranch, just north of here, an old mother cat has adopted a litter of skunks.
