AMERICAN PUSH THE COUNTY FAIR Our people should not permit themselves to become so engrossed in the war and kindred subjects as to neglect ample preparations for the county fair this fall. We may be tempted to think we are too busy to attend to it, but in this we will commit a grave error. A county or neighborhood fair is not a luxury, not an indulgence, but one of the most important institutions of any community. It is as essential to the best interests of the industrial life of the community as i8 the school to the intellectual, or the church to the spiritual life. Its educational influence in only limited by the energy with which it is pushed. ‘In these days, when the need is urgent that production be stimulated to the maximum, every agency that tends to arouse enthusiasm and a desire to excel should be carefully fostereda This the county fair does|# as no other institution does or can. ‘We should bend every energy to getting together this fall the most complete exhibit of the products of the country that it is possible to as- semble. We will need the stimulus of the inspiration in the years to come. The need for record production will not end with this season. Un- less all signs fail, the productive agencies of this country have a strenuous time before~them for many years to come. Let us center every energy on the main issue—preparedness—and PUSH it to a SUCCESSFUL conclusion. THE EDITOR AROSE A preacher at the conclusion of one of his sermons said: ‘Let all in the house who are paying their debts stand up.” Instantly the entire congregation, with one exception, rose to its feet. The preacher seated them and said, “Now every man not paying his debts stand up.” The ex- ception noted a careworn, hungry looking individual clothed in his last summer’s suit, slowly assumed a perpendicular position. “How is it, my friend,” asked the minister, “that you are the only man mnot able or dis- posed to meet his obligations?” “I am an editor and run a newspaper,”” he meekly answered, “and the brethern here who stood up are my sub- seribers; and—" “Let us pray!” exclaimed the preacher.—C.
