$1 A SMOKE! That's what Sammies had to pay over in France during the te 0 famine last week. The Star le helping raise a tobacco fund for Sammies. Will you do your bit Tale GOLDEN CALF HE United States government has asked the lumbermen of this state, in the name of patiotism, to quit their miser- able squabble over WAR profits and to grant their men the humanitarian eight- hour-workday standard. AND THE LUMBERMEN WASHINGTON, TURNING THEIR NOSES AT UNCLE TELL THE GOVERNMENT CHASE ITSELF! An anonymous lumberman is quoted in one Seattle newspaper as saying that War Secretary Baker's appeal to the lum- bermen to end the strike because “every impediment placed in the way of lumber production GIVES AID AND COM- FORT TO THE ENEMY” will be bar- ren of results. The official! statement of the West Coast OF ur SAM, lO GO i Lumbermen’s association asserts that Sec- pei retary Baker’s plea will “not necessarily change the situation.” PROFITS! PROFITS! PROFITS! HOW LONG, OH, LORD, MUST WE _ | SUFFER FROM PROFIT PA- TRIOTISM? * * 8 #% HERE has been no time in recent years when the lumber industry in this state was so prosperous. There has been no time when the lumbermen have made as much money. There has. been no time when they are guaranteed so steady and so large a business, for “every foot of lumber that can be produced is necessary” for the national defense, according to the secretary of war. The government of the United States, which is paying for most of this lumber and paying a higher rate than existed be- fore the war, now asks lumbermen of the Northwest to grant an eight-hour day, the standard in government work. “Our men at the front,” said War Secre- tary Baker, speaking for the Council of National Defense, “are even now making sacrifices for the common good, with greater sacrifices to follow. Surely our men at home must be equally willing to make sacrifices for the welfare of the nation.” But no! There are going to be no sac- rifices of dollars, if the spokesmen of the lumbermen here can help it! 2 s+ tr re “We must have our profits,” say, in effect, patriotic!” they “before we can be ee * * 4 HINGS cannot go on in this shame- less and TRAITOROUS manner. a Gre f The crowd enjoying t The her office.
