The next article .on Thrift will appear in the Pioneer Dec. 22.—Editor. Harry Lauder, the famous Scotch .comedian, who has made millions laugh, and who commands a fabulous salary for his vaudeville sketches, be- lieves in thrift. He woulden’t be a Scotchman if he did not. “Easy come, easy go” is the rule in profes- sions where big money is made for little effort. The theatrical profes- sion is noted for its spending propen- tities, but Harry believes in saving. Out of his earnings he accumulated enough to subscribe $50,000 to the British War Loan—patriotism at four per cent. Harry has a few homely maxims on thrift that have been widely cir- culated during the war period, in the hope that his followers woul Xmas Bargains BARGAINS! and Carlisle Pianos. 114 Third Sreet BARGAINS COME INTO OUR STORE And get our prices and terms. know that you will experience the joy of having a piano in your home for Christmas. Behave toward your purse as you would to your best friend. 2. View the reckless spending of money as criminal and shun the com- pany of the reckless spender. 3. Dress neatly, but not lavishly. A bank pays a higher rate of interest than your back. 4. Take your amusements judici- ously. You will enjoy them better. 5. Don’t throw away the crusts— eat them. They are as nourishing as beef. 6. It is more exhilarating to feel money in your pocket than beer in your stomach. ® 7. Remember it only takes twenty shillings to make a pound, and twelye pennies make a shilling. 8. You can sleep better after a hard day’s work than after a hard " |day’s idleness. 9. Get good value from your trades- men. They wateh out that they get good money from you. = 10. Washingten, D-C.l-:-uu-—uu-t BILL 0 RECOVER MONEY FOR STATE Senator Nelson Will Introduce One on Representations By Auditor Preus. ‘Washington, Dec. 17.—Senator Nelson will shortly introduce a bill providing for payment to the State of Minnesota for timber cut from swamp lands in the Leech Lake, Cass Lake and Winnibigoshish reserva- tions. Senator Nelson, with State Auditor Preus, presented the matter to Secretary Lane today in order that the Secretary might be informed of the state’s position. It is claimed that the land did not belong to the Indians, but that it inured to the State under the swamp grant. The proceeds of the timber cut from it is estimated at from $75,000 to $150,000, but the exact area and value will have to be determined by an examination of the records. The money has been deposited in the Chip- pewa fund in the treasury and a spe- cial act of congress is necessary to get it for the state. Enemies of Field Mice. Field mice have many enemies other than the farmer, but the numbers of their enemies unfortunately are not generally appreciated or some of them would not be so thoughtlessly killed. Among. their enemies are coyotes, wild- cats, foxes. badgers. raccoons, 0pos- sums, skunks. weasels, shrews and the domestic cat and dog. Among their bird enemies are included nearly all hawks and owls, storks, ibises, herons, cranes, gulls, shrikes. cuckoos and crows. Among their reptile foes are blacksnakes and bullsnakes. Of all these enemies the ow! is- probably the most destructive. and none of the American owls. unless it be the great horned owl, is to be classed as other than useful to the farmer in keeping the premises free from both house and field mice. One other very important feature that adds to the city’s welfare is. the safety that results from well lighted streets. The brighter the lights the less likelihood of theft and other crimes. The more lights a city burns the fewer policemen it needs and' the smaller may be its police stations.
