‘ada, who died at his home several GERMAN AGVANGE IS Brussels, Aug. 6.—The Belgian forces have checked the German ad- vance with very heavy losses on both sides. i The German army, having Cologne as its base, crossed the Belgian fron- tier at Gemmenieh. Divided into two columns it advanced against Liege and Namur. The heaviest fighting was in the attack on Liege, where a German force of 50,000 was engaged by Belgians of half that number. The Germans attempted to carry ihe entrenchmenis beyond Liege by storm, but were repulsed by a wither- ing artillery fire and the advance col- amn feil back in confusion, leaving many dead and wounded. The Belgians had mounted machine wuns zlong the railway line command- ing the right of way and the military road that paralleled*it and the Ger- mans were unable to carry the posi- tion by storm. After falling back, the Germans rapidly entrenched and mounted artillery, with which _they are now bombarding Liege from a half circular position extending for eight miles. KAISER'S REPLY IS DECLARATION GF WAR London, Aug. 6.—The kaiser’s reply to the British ultimatum was a decla- ration of war. It was received at the foreign office before the time limit set by Great Britain. The British government then waited until the expiration of the ul- timatum in order to keep its record clear and then issued a declaration of war against Germany. The British officially hold that Eng- land declared war, as the declaration by the kaiser was not officially an- nounced. Volunteers are flocking ~to army neadquarters. The war spirit has spread everywhere. It is announced that the war office will accept all offers of troops from the colonies, but no arrangements for transporting them will be made until it is certain they will be needed. OFFER OF GOOD OFFICES President 80 Directed in Resolution in Senate. 5 ‘Washington, Aug. é.—A resolution directing President Wilson to ap- proach the warring nations of Europs with an offer of good offices of this government was introduced by Sena- tor McCumber of North Dakota and Teferred to the committee on foreign relations. The resolution would have the president urge eofther mediation or arbitration. It declares the United States represents people of all the mnations involved and that its friend- 1y offices probably would meet with no. unfairness on the part of any of the nations involved. WILL REMAIN IN PORT THERE Two More German Liners Reach New York. New York, Aug. 6.—Another Ger-! man liner whose whereabouts has ‘been veiled, the Kaiser Wilhelm 1I. of ‘the North German Lloyd line, arrived safely in port. i The Kaiser Wilhelm II. is from Bremen, Southampton and Cherbourg, with about 250 cabin passengers, mails and a valuable cargo. She left ‘Cherbourg Wednesday night, Juiy 29. The Hamburg-American liner Presi- | «dent Lincoln, from Cherbourg, Bou- logne and Southampton, also arrived. When she discharges her passengers and cargo she will probably join the big fleet of steamers already interned in port here. PAUL SCHMUNK BURIED. Died at Evanton, Canada—Relatives | Reside Here.
