Paris, Aug. 6.—The French ministry of war issued a communication say- fog that German cavalry and infantry were crossing the French frontier qeerywhere in reconnoitering parties. R adds: “A squadron of German dragoons bore down on Villers-la-Montague, in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, but was repulsed by French riflemen. “A regiment of German cavalry agd- vanoed as far as Morontaine, in the same department, but fell bagk 'bo- fore a body of KFrench infantry. “The French mobilization is pro- mhng with the greatest order. Most of the reservists already have joined. “An excellent spirit prevails in Al sece.” Santos Dumont, the famous aviator, has offered his services to the French government. The one-armed French general, Paul Pau, who fought in the war of 1870, has been placed in command of one of the French armies. RUSSIAN PGPULACE BITTER German Embassy at St. Petersburg Destroyed. ‘Washington, Aug. 6.—The German émbassy in St. Petersburg has been destroyed by a mob inflaried by a re- Yort that the Russian embassy in Ber- lin had been attacked. One German employe was killed. The state de- partment does not credit reports of an attack on the Russian embassy in Berlin. Its information comes from St. Petersburg in diplomatic dis- patches. OPPOSING WARSHIPS OFF NEW YORK CITY New York, Aug. 6.—From wireless | signals picked up it is believed that there are three German cruisers and the converted cruiser Prinz Wilhelm, | three English cruisers and two French cruisers just off the entrance of New York harbor. ! Now that war has been declared be- tween Germany and England it is be- lieved a big naval engagement may be fought oft the American coast should the English and German or the French and German cruisers get within firing' distance of each other. It is not believed, however, that the German ships will risk an engage- ment if they possibly can escape it. The cruisers are patrolling the American coast to seize any foreign treasure ship or ships ‘loaded with food or fuel that may leave American ports for Europe. IMMENSE PREMIUMS OFFERED FOR TICKETS London, Aug. 6.—Among the 240 cabin passengers and 1,000 Americans going in the steerage ‘on board the Philadelphia, sailing for New York, are many wealthy persons. Enormous premiums were offered for tickets. One speculator offered Charles Ald- rich and family of Cleveland $1,u00 for their room, or $500 if they allowed him to travel with them. Martin Vogel, United States subtreasurer at New York, with his bride, also were among the passengers. They said they were in Berlin five days and “the Germans were parading the streets as though celebrating victory.” Later on they passed through Paris, where they said “the contrast was ‘marvelous. Germany Demands That Treaty Ob- ligations Be Observed. ; Rome, Aug: 6—Germany has now demanded that Italy ‘live up to ‘her treaty obligations. The German am- bassador formally notified the| foreign office that Germany had been attacks: ed by France and England and that it expected the- aid pledged in the treaty. The cabinet immediately met to consider the appeal, but it is believed that Italy will continue to try to main- tain her neutrality. ONE WARSHIP SUNK - AND TWO CAPTURED Toulon, France, Aug. 6.—France has won the first important sea battle. Trapped by French and, British squadrons in the Mediterranean the German squadron, comprising the scout cruiser Panther, the dread- nought Goeben and the cruiser Bres- lau fought vainly to escape. The Panther was sunk and the oth- er two war craft were captured. After bombarding the French forti- fled towns along the Algerian coast, the Germans steamed toward Gibral tar. A British fleet which had put out for Malta headed them off and they doubled back toward Algeria. The French battle squadron which had been sent to protect Algeria in- tercepted them and the battle follow- ed. The Panther, a small crulser with minor armament, was riddled by the French fire and a shell exploded in her magazine, practically blowing her to pleces with the loss of most of her crew. The Goeben fought for some time, but her machinery was finally dis- abled and she struck her flag. The Breslau attempted to escape, but was overtaken by two French cruisers and after a short, sharp engagement also surrendered. GERMANS REPORTED BURNING VILLAGES Liege, Belgium, Aug. 6.—The cap- ture of the Belgian frontier town of Vise was ecffected by German troops after an engagement lasting several hours. It is stated that the victors set fire to the town, Kkilling those of the population who resisted them. The town of Argenteau also is in flames. One hundred thousand Ger- mans are reported to be marching on Liege. . * St. Petersburg, Aug. 6.—Russian troops have established contact with the enemy along the greater part of the Russo-German frontier in North- eastern Prussia. The Germans are reported to have fallen back and to be burning vil- lages over an enormous stretch of the country, which they have invaded.
