Z:. —Former Alder- man_ Martin Mikkelson, for years & member of the Socialist party, who represented the Fifth ward in the council from 191¢ to 1912, has resign- ed from the party. He gives as his reason that he can no longer “be a hypocrite.” “I quit the party for good because I was tired of legislating things I didn’t believe in,” Mr. Mikkelson said. “I was tired of the political wirepull- ing in the Socialist party. St. Paul, Dec. . —That a landlord is liable for the health of a tenant’s employes who become ill through in- sufficient heating of a building was the decision of the state supreme court. Nancy B. Glidden, stenographer, sued W. E. Goodlellow, owner of a Minneapolis building, for $25,000, al- leging that she caught a cold which developed into tuberculosis because the building in which she worked for one of his tenants was not sufficient- ly heated. The defendant demurred to the complaint, maintaining that he was not compelled to protect employes of tenants and was upheld by the Hen- nepin county court, which was revers- ed by the state supreme court. EARLY ACTION IS EXPECTED Suffrage Proposal to Come Up in Con- gress After Holidays. ‘Washington, Dec. 22.—Early action in the senate on the proposed consti- tutional amendment to enfranchise women is expected by the senators who favor the proposal and the wom- an suffragist leaders at headquarters of the National American Woman's Suffrage association. Norfolk, Va., Dec. 22.—The ecrip- pled battleship Vermont arrived at the Norfolk navy yard in tow of naval tugs. The Vermont, though badly crippled, was in no danger. Pays Alimony to Four Wives, Fort Smith, Ark., Dec. 22.—Robert O’Brien, aged sixty years, a well-to-do farmer, is paying $80 a month ali- mony to four divorced wives. Cleveland, O., Dec. 22,—The strike of waiters which has prevailed in three local hotels for a week ended as far2as two of the hotels, the Hollen- den and Colonial, are concerned. Managers of these hotels effected a compromise with the strikers and they returned to work. ! The strikers were granted better working conditions, a working week of gix days and a raise of $2.50 a month. Recognition of the union was waived. CITY ASSISTS UNEMPLOYED Portland Will Give Work to Men at $3 a Day. Portland, Ore., Dec. 22.—The Port land commission passed an emergen: cy ordinance to give work to 1,000 unemployed men in the city parks and the water bureau at $3 a day. Single men will be given work two days of eight hours each week and men with families will be employed three days a weelr Federal Troops Surrender.
