Mr. Stoner has been building the Nakoda spur of the M. & L railway for the Backus- Brooks company, and he states that he will have the grade to Black river entirely completed by the end of the present week, and that he will begin laying steel the first of next week. This branch will be used to haul pulpwood and logs for the Backus-Brooks company to In- ternational Falls from the Black river. Carl Opsatta, the Town of Frohn farmer, was in Bemidji Saturday, and he was real mad. Some person bad taken a hive filled with busy bees and made away with the industry, leaving but little trace behind as to where the bees might be found. White and son Harold returned to the city Sunday morn- ing from Minneapolis, where Mr, White had been several days an a business mission. D. H. Eastman of St. Paul, a son of J. H. Eastman of Crookston, well-defined suspicion as to who was responsible for his loss, and he obtained ‘search warrant while in the city and started homeward determined to recover the honey producers. Mr. Opsatta is doing nicely with his bee-raising. and honey-producing industry; and he states that the little fellows are already beginning their season of activity, which is much earlier than any year previous since he was engaged in the bee business. Richard Evans, who is grading| the right-of-way for the Soo from Cass Lake to Bemidji, was a visitor in Bemidji yesterday. Mr. Evans stated that he expected to begin using a steam shovel this week on the “last leg” of his grade into Be- midji, as the route into the city limits had finally been determined. Captain Wilsey, - the veteran farmer who lives on the banks of Three Island lake, came to Bemidji this morning from Turtle River and transacted business in the city today. Hutchinson, well known in this city through being a member of last year’s Bemidji baseball team, was an over-Sunday visitor in the city. “Hutch,” is now a clerk in the New Park:-hotel at Great Falls, Montana, where he is doing very well. He was returning through this city to Great Falls from a visit with his parents at Eagle Bend. Charles W. Scrutchin left yester- day afternoon for St. Paul, for the purpose of appearing before the board of pardons, at St. Paul today, to ask a pardon for Joseph Smith, who was sent to the penitentiary from Cass county, for a term of ten years, for robbery, which was com- mitted at Cass Lake in 1908, the crime being the holding up of a man in a saloon. Lee LeGore left this morning for Rose Lake, Oregon, where he will enter the employ of the Rose Lake Lumber company. Mr. LeGore has been acting as cashier at the M. & 1. Depot; and his place will be taken by Olof Olson, formerly night bill clerk. Mrs. LaGore and daughter are in Minneapolis and will join Lee at Rose Lake in a few days. Lee LeGore has a whole lot of friends in Bemidji, and all join in wishing he and Mrs. Lagore pros- perity in their new home. George Cochran is busy these days looking. after the big LaSalle 1drive ‘of logs which is owned by the Grand Forks Lumber company. Mr. Cochran cut a large amount of timber in the LaSalle country for the Grand Forks company, which was banked on LaSille lake. This timber will be driven to Lake Irving and hoisted onto cars and taken to East Grand Forks, to be sawed into lumber at the company’s mill there. 'Cass Lake, April 11.—(Special to Pioneer.)—Supervisor Marshall of the Minnesota National forest reserve, which has its headquarters at Cass Lake, has just received a communication from the forestry supervisor of the Michigan national forestry .reserve, -asking for 5,000 Norway seedlings with which to again start a growth of Norway trees. The Michigan forests have beenall -burned over and they are without seed. Mr. Marshall states that the seed- lings are exceedingly plentiful in the Minnesota reserve and that he will forward the desired Norway producers as soon as possible. A fire'which is ‘supposed to have originated in a waste basket "in the Soo office adjoining. the Endion hotel, did about $400 da mage, about 9:30 last night. The hotel = clerk was the first one ‘to smell smoke, and after a few minutes’ search, the Soo office was opened and the room was filled with smoke. The waste basket in the cormer was smoking heavily and wben it was removed a hole about six inches in dimeter was found to be burned, while flames indicated that fire was under the hotel. The ‘alarm was turned in and when the department arrived the flames were spreading rapidly, but by-good work the firémen soon had the fire extinguished, Starving.
