The sheriffs assembled business in the court room at the court house, where the meeting was called to order at 2 o’clock. Marshall A. Spooner, of this city, judge of the Fifteenth Judicial district, welcomed the sheriffs to this city, on behalf of the residents of Bemidji. The judge stated that he was more than pleased, he was delighted, to see solarge an attendance of the members of the association, - who had evidently come for the double purpose of getting together for mutual benefit and also for partak- ing of hospitality of the city and Belated Life-Like Picture of Sheriff jfilius great extent, exercising the greatest discretion in the performance of his duties. That Minnesota possessed men who possessed all of these qualifica- tions had been amply demonstrated through recent occurrences through- out one section of the northern part of the state, where certain sheriffs had given ample evidence of deter- mination in putting down lawless- ness. In concluding, Judge Spooner gave the visiting sheriffs a most hearty welcome to the city; assured them that the community was theirs during their stay here, and hoped they would enjoy their visit to the fullest. In responding to the address of William J. Julius, sheriff of Brown county, had sent us his cut, in answer to our request for his Sheriff A. L. Irwin of Wadena has reminded us of the omission and has assisted us in tracing the cut of the genial peace officer from New Ulm; and with due apologies to Mr. Julius, for our delay in the matter, we herewith reproduce the cut, which is made from a half-tone photograph, was one of the most elaborate affairs ever given in the city, and reflected great crediton F. S. Lycan, the proprietor of the Markham, under whose personal direction the banquet was served. There were plates. laid for 100, and the tables were filled to 'their capacity, many residents of the city mingling with the visiting sheriffs and assisting in making them feel “at home.” It was 9:30 when the spacious dining room of the hotel was thrown open and the guests were invited to enter and partake of the feast. The banquet was prepared in an elegant manner, and there was the best of service. First came an appli- cation from merchants of Bemidji, who ask thatBemidji be made a dis- tributing point in the way of rail- road rate concessions. It will be remembered that some time ago the state commission established various “inland distributing - points,” where jobbing houses are located and ern Pacific. The commission will hold a hearing there on the subject members of the commission had put in an appearance, and it is pos- sible that the foregoing telegram is a hoax. However, Bemidji should receive proper consideration at the hands of the commission as being the best city in the north half of the state east of Crookston and west of Duluth. > e ————— chairs, cooking utensils, etc., arranged and was preparing dinner, the wind from the lake wafting a pleasant smell of savory viands, that a feast was in store. J. E. Lundgren, the Alexandria big one who is secretary, was desig- nated as custodian of the commis- sary department, and clad in a bunch of good humor and a_ prodig- ious apron, dealt out the hospitality which had been bottled for the occasion, and which was liberally partaken of. There was much informal “conver- sation water,” and the result was a pleasant mingling of tongues like unto the “Tower of Babel of Holy Writ,” The dinner was one of the most elaborate dinpers ever served and Sheriff Bailey had spared no pains to make it one of the very best. ‘The excursion today will close the convention which has been the most successful gathering in the history of the association.. Sheriff Dreger, president of the State Sheriffs’ association says of the meeting: “‘Sheriff Bailey, with his force of deputies, and the Bemidji Commercial Club, did everythingpos- sible tomake our stay a pleasant one, and the Daily Pioneer gave more interesting matter than has ever been printed by any paper at any previous meeting. As the chief executive of the association, I feel deeply grateful. 5 Around the Lake. Mrs. F. S. Sargent, who has been the guest of Mrs. T. B. The landing was made at the ex- treme northern end of the lake, in the center of a fine stand of Norway pine, and again were the sheriffs moved to expressions of real pleasure at the view afforded of the virgin forest. 3 Deputy Sheriff John Bailey had been busy since morning at the picnic ground and had tables, dishes, with .her Jeweled movement, . beautiful monogram en- graved on back, only $12.25 Other bargains equally as low.
