MAL SCHOOL INDEFINITELY POSTPONED. MALF A MILLIION DOLLARS RE- QUESTED FOR BUILDINGS AT STATE PRISON. St. Paul, March 20.—The senate in committee of the whole, with Senator Manley L. Fosseen of Minneapolis pre- siding, voted to recommend for indefi- nite postponement both bills relating to the establishment of a normal school in the northern part of the state. One bill, introduced by Senator D. M. Gunn of Grand Rapids, provid- ed for the establishment of a school at Cass Lake, and another bill, intro- duced Dby Senator A. L. Hanson of Ada, provided for the establishment of the school on or north of a line of the Great Northern rcad running from Duluth to East Grand Forks. Senator Gunn's bill was reported back by the normal school committee without recommendation, and after considerable argument on the bill a motion made by Senator 8. D. Works of Mankato to Indefinitely postpone the bill was adopted, after Senator Hanson’s amendment to substitute Bemidjl for Cass Lake had been killed. Senator Hanson’s bill had been recommended for indefinite postpone- ment 5y the committee, but when the committee’s report came up for adop- tion a motion again by Senator Works to have the bill placed on the calendar prevniled. When the bill came wup Senator Gunn moved that it be recom- mended for indefinite postponement, and this motion was carried. Leaves the Question Dead. This leaves the normal school ques- tion dead unless the house passes one of the bills pending in that body. The senate passed H. F. No. 586, which authorizes the state board of control to allow the sale of the binder twine manufactured at the state pris on when in its judgment it is for the best interests of the state to do so and _!authorizes dealers to charge a profiL of 13z cents a pound on the twine |} when it is sold on credit. The present law authorizes a profit of only 1 cent on all of the prison twine. Provision for the construction of {the new buildings state prison at Stillwater by an appro- priation of $500,000, is made in a bili introduced by Senator George H. Sul- ltivan of Stillwater. The appropriation is made avallable at the rate of $250,- 000 a year for the two years ending July 31, 1808. The board of control is authorized to construct necessary ad- for the enlarged ditional prison shop, storage and other buildings for the enlargement of the prison on the land purchased by the board under authority of an act passed by the lesislature in 1905 and to build a wall around such part of the lands ag necessary and to install machinery and power plant and to provide for heat, light, water and ventilation for | the butidings. s Natural abillties can almost compen- sate for the want of every kind of cul- Hvation,—Schopenhauer.
